More than six decades after leaving Canada, legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has officially become a U.S. citizen, a decision she says she made to become a voter.

"I became a citizen so I could vote. I didn't give up my Canadian citizenship, and I never will," read a post on the official Joni Mitchell Instagram account.

"I'm a proud Canerican like Neil Young."

Canada and the U.S. allow for dual citizenship, meaning Mitchell will retain her Canadian passport.
