Giovanni Battista Bugatti, known by the nickname Mastro Titta, served as the official executioner for the Papal States from 1796 to 1864. Appointed at the age of 17, he carried out 516 executions under six successive popes, including Pius VI, Pius VII, and Pius IX, making him the longest-serving executioner in the state's history.
His career spanned 68 years, during which he utilized various methods including beheading with an axe, hanging, and later the guillotine. Despite the grim nature of his work, Bugatti viewed himself as a public servant, often offering snuff to condemned prisoners before their deaths. He retired with a papal pension and died in 1869, with his distinctive scarlet robe and axe now preserved in Rome’s Museum of Criminology.
