US Orders Non-Essential Government Personnel and Families to Leave Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks
The State Department has ordered non-emergency government personnel and their families to leave Saudi Arabia, citing attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen on civilian targets in the country.
"Iranian-supported Houthis have increasingly engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure resulting in civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions," State Department Tommy Pigott wrote on X.
“The safety and security of Department personnel and their families remain our highest priority, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to protect and support them,” he added.
The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert Wednesday warning of possible further Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, following recent deadly strikes, including an attack on Riyadh’s airport. Major carriers such as Lufthansa and Air France have suspended flights to Riyadh through mid-November, while Saudi airlines, including Saudia and Flynas, resumed operating flights on Wednesday.
