I imagine that most people think of ham radio as being shortwave. In fact, most ham licenses are for VHF i.e. line of sight frequencies. Max range if you're 6 feet tall standing on the shore is 3 miles.

However, that linear transmission is just that: linear. A satellite in geosynchronous orbit anywhere in "line of sight" of a VHF transmitter will receive it.

Concerned about spy satellites? It's not what's "overhead" that will get ya, but what's in direct line of sight outside your bedroom window if you're on VHF.

Nellie didn't consider this because "these people are stupid." But the Chinks and Ruskies got everything.
