So anons here have mentioned that <no name>'s campaign manager N3QEM has a bunch of repeaters in northern virginia using a digital radio technology known as DMR.

 

The first thing that caught my attention when I looked up N3QEM is that he has a technician ticket. Most hams that are serious about the hobby will get at least their general license before they go standing up repeaters. Putting up a single repeater is a significant undertaking for a club, let alone an individual.

 

But here's where it gets interesting: these three N3QEM repeaters are linked through the DMR system to the CHICAGOLAND repeater network. https://chicagoland-cc.org/

 

In the PDF, the first list is the repeater locations and the second is the talk groups enabled on each. I'm more familiar with the competing standard D-Star, but essentially these talk groups are a way for someone with a radio in chicago, shaumburg, nashville and herndon to talk through their local repeaters.
