Nellie Ohr holds a Technician class Amateur Radio license. This license class limits operating privileges to all VHF/UHF bands and limited privileges on certain HF bands. Most Technicians use their license to communicate locally via simplex communications or through repeaters with duplex communications. Since VHF/UHF are line-of-sight, repeaters are most commonly used. To extend your range, some repeaters have the ability to link to other repeaters which can then give you great range.

In addition, now Technicians can make use of newer operating systems like APRS, D-Star, System Fusion, and Echolink. With Echolink for example, a Technician class operator could communicate anywhere in the world from their mobile phone via the Echolink app. That's right, you don't even need a radio -- just a license and a cell phone.

There are other modes such as Packet Radio where Technicians could utilize a computer to interface with their radio to interface with Packet BBS stations in order to send and receive messages just like Email.

So, just because KM4UDZ had a Technician class license, she wasn't limited to communication in a small geographic region. Of course, she was probably just using amateur radio to talk about grandchildren just like BC and LL did on the tarmac.
