Covington Man Sentenced to 360 Months for Production of Child Pornography

COVINGTON, Ky., — Ryan J. Brock, 34, of Covington, was sentenced yesterday to 360 months in federal prison, by United States District Judge David L. Bunning, for production of child pornography. The sentence imposed was the maximum allowed by the statute.

Brock previously admitted to sexually abusing a minor relative and producing photographs and videos of the abuse using a tablet device. When a search warrant was executed at Brock’s residence in Covington, his device was not located, but an empty box for the device was found inside his vehicle. Agents also located a laptop that was forensically examined and found to contain images and videos depicting the sexual abuse perpetrated by Brock, as well as other child pornography. He pleaded guilty to the charge in December 2017.

Under federal law, Brock must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence, and, upon release, will be under the supervision of the United States Probation Office for 25 years.

Robert M. Duncan, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; James M. Gibbons, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Chicago Field Office; and Chief Robert Nader, Covington Police Department, jointly announced the sentence.

The investigation was conducted by HSI and the Covington Police Department. The United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Elaine K. Leonhard.

The Black Hat cybersecurity conference currently being held in Las Vegas brings together a variety of experts to discuss the risks, pitfalls — and locations — of flaws in computer networks.

Ruben Santamara of IOActive has found a doozy, Forbes reports.

He’s found a weakness in the satellite communications network which provides aircraft with a wide variety of services — from passenger Wi-Fi to weather forecasts.

He says that, had he been inclined, he could peek into every connected phone, tablet or laptop on planes streaming overhead. And he did this by tapping into the antennas beaming data directly to each aircraft.

It sounds incredible: the ability to tap into a commercial airliner’s onboard systems as it flies thousands of feet overhead. But a cyber expert told a security conference he’s managed to do just that — hundreds of times.

The Black Hat cybersecurity conference currently being held in Las Vegas brings together a variety of experts to discuss the risks, pitfalls — and locations — of flaws in computer networks.

He’s found a weakness in the satellite communications network which provides aircraft with a wide variety of services — from passenger Wi-Fi to weather forecasts.

He says that, had he been inclined, he could peek into every connected phone, tablet or laptop on planes streaming overhead. And he did this by tapping into the antennas beaming data directly to each aircraft.

While commercial airliner’s onboard systems remained out of his direct reach, Santamara warns the access he gained gave him the hypothetical power to damage specific parts of an aircraft as satellite communications technology allowed the transfer of energy via radio frequencies.

This could potentially cause burns or damage sensitive equipment, he said.

Forbes reports the cybersecurity expert as saying the satellite-link flaws enabled him to tap into cargo ships and oil tankers. He says it also gave him the ability to track the location of supposedly top secret military bases.

Santamara says he’s reported his findings to the relevant airlines, satellite operators and government agencies. Some exploits, he says, remain open.

“I think there are still [open] attack vectors,” he told Forbes, warning the weaknesses will not be easy to fix. “In certain cases, it’s more of a design issue. It’s not going to be easy.”

Sugar Land confirms presence of West Nile virus

The city of Sugar Land has confirmed the presence of the West Nile virus at a mosquito trap on University Boulevard, according to a news release from the city Friday.

At least one of the mosquitoes trapped earlier this week tested positive for the virus, the release said. The mosquito trap is located on University Boulevard near the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land.

HAGUE ANTI-ISLAM POLITICIAN DIES IN APPARENT SUICIDE AFTER GANG RAPE CLAIM

The Hague city councilor Willie Dille committed suicide on Wednesday, newspaper AD reports based on sources.

Earlier on Wednesday Dille posted a video on Facebook in which she claimed that she was kidnapped, raped and assaulted by a group of Muslim people on March 15th last year - the day of the municipal elections. The perpetrators wanted her to keep quiet in the city council, Dille said.

Dille did not file a formal complaint about the alleged violent crimes, though she was given the opportunity to do so, a police spokesperson told AD. Authorities said they reached out to her several times to investigate her accusations, and to offer her victim services, but no complaint and no evidence there was little investigators could do.

Representative Mark Meadows has announced on twitter that DOJ official Bruce Ohr has been scheduled to testify on August 28th, this month.

According to additional details provided to the Daily Caller, Ohr will testify to the same joint committee that previously heard testimony from Lisa Page. The joint committee is a blend of House Oversight (Trey Gowdy, Chairman) and House Judiciary (Bob Goodlatte, Chairman). If the same process is used, Chairman Goodlatte will determine which committee members will conduct the questioning.

FBI agent found not guilty of lying about gunshots

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A jury found an FBI agent not guilty Friday of obstructing an investigation into who fired two errant shots at a key figure in a group that seized an Oregon wildlife refuge in 2016.

W. Joseph Astarita, 41, displayed a slight smile when the jury returned its verdict after less than a day of deliberations. He left the courthouse without comment.

Actress Sean Young wanted for questioning in burglary

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say actress Sean Young is wanted for questioning after she was caught on surveillance video stealing laptops and video production software from a store in New York City.

Police say employees at a store in Queens reported a burglary Thursday. They say surveillance video showed Young and a male companion breaking in and stealing laptops and software worth about $12,000.
