Ferry Boat Captain, Crew Member Suspended For Hoisting ‘Trump 2020’ Flag
A boat captain and a crew member with North Carolina’s ferry system have been suspended for a week for flying a flag supporting President Donald Trump’s coming re-election bid in 2020.
"A passenger on the MV Frisco ferry took a picture of the 'Trump 2020' flag flying below the U.S. flag and even with the North Carolina flag last month and posted it to social media," the Associated Press reported.
The passenger reportedly posted a picture on Twitter: “Is this appropriate? I don’t think so.” The tweet has since been deleted.
Ferry Division spokesman Tim Hass told media outlets that putting campaign material on a state-owned vessel is not appropriate. He did not release the names of the employees suspended for a week.
"The ferry Frisco was traveling between Hatteras and Ocracoke about twilight," the Virginia Pilot reported.
The flag hung on poles high above the deck just below the American flag and at the same level as the North Carolina state flag. It was up briefly, no longer than one trip across, said Tim Hass, spokesman for the North Carolina Ferry Division.
“No matter the political viewpoint, any sort of campaign material on a state ferry is in violation of policy,” Hass said.
State Ferry Division Director Harold Thomas and NCDOT’s Office of Employee Relations will help investigate.
Officials will “take the appropriate disciplinary action,” Hass said.

Nancy Pelosi Struggles To Explain What Democrats Stand For Other Than Stopping Trump
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi struggled to explain what the Democrats stand for other than obstructing President Trump’s agenda during an interview Sunday morning on “AM Joy.”
“Let’s get into the midterm elections. Democrats are hoping to reclaim the majority in the House of Representatives, which they lost in the 2010 midterm elections,” said Jonathan Capehart, the fill-in host. “There are a lot of people out there, particularly Democrats, who are saying the Democrats have no message, the Democrats they don’t know what they’re for, they know they’re against President Trump but they don’t know what they’re for.”
“Democrats are for the people. Democrats are for the people,” Pelosi responded. “It means we are for the people having lower health care costs, reducing the costs of prescription drugs. Southern India Floods Kill 33, While 6 Go Missing in Incessant Rains
Chief Minister of the India’s southern Kerala state, Pinarayi Vijayan, said on Sunday (August 12), that the figure of the deceased in incessant floods reached 33 and six people were reported missing, after heavy monsoon rains lashed several parts of the state.
Heavy rainfall has affected thousands and many were forced to flee their homes. Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Pathalam and Wayanad are among the worst hit districts of the state, so far.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and India’s Army, Airforce, Navy, Coast Guard, and other trained forces were also invited for rescue operation for the civilians stuck in flooded areas.
Civilians were seen scurrying to their roofs to escape the gushing flood waters. Many of them have been forced to live on their roofs as the ground floors of homes which are low-lying have been submerged by the floods.
Relief camps have been set up in various places in the state. One of the victims, Vishnu said that help was coming everywhere in the form of basic necessities like clothes, blankets etc.
Rainfall is important for India as a major section of its 1.2 billion population is engaged in farming and depends on rains. However, excessive monsoon rains this year caused major rivers across India to swell causing floods and widespread loss of property and life. The impact is worsened by crumbling civic infrastructure, clogged drains and uncontrolled urban expansion.

Mother's thank-you note to teen who bought her coffee goes viral: 'It turned my whole day around'

A teen’s sweet offer toward a stressed-out mother at Starbucks has made a surprising impact on both women’s lives.
On Tuesday, 19-year-old Mackenzie Mauller of Union Town, Ohio, tweeted, “Yesterday I bought coffee for the lady behind me at Starbucks…later in the day I found this [in] my mailbox. Small acts can make a big difference folks, spread some kindness.”
Mauller also posted a soon-to-be viral photo of the handwritten note from the woman, whose name is Nicole Clawson, which read, “Thank you for the coffee. I rarely go to Starbucks and treat myself but the last couple of months have been a bit of a struggle.”
Clawson wrote that her family was experiencing lots of transition: Her father, who had provided daily care for her children, had recently passed away; that morning, her babysitter had called in sick, forcing Clawson to take the day off work; and the mom was soon leaving her job to become a stay-at-home mother, a role she was not “emotionally and financially” prepared to assume.
“I cried when I found out you were so sweet to buy my coffee,” wrote Clawson, “and thrilled to see you pull in a couple houses down from where I live. I felt it necessary for you to know that what you did for me was more than just a coffee. It was something that has turned my whole day around, put tears in my eyes and a smile on my face and I feel so grateful.”
That day, Clawson felt guilty while sitting in the drive-through lane of Starbucks. “It’s been hard because I am no longer providing income, but I decided to buy coffee for myself and breakfast for the kids,” the 32-year-old tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “An employee at the order window said my coffee had been paid for — I was shocked.”

On the way home, Clawson found herself trailing the car driven by the stranger, who eventually pulled into a driveway across the street and a few houses down from Clawson’s home. “I thought to myself, ‘How often do people pay it forward and learn the impact of their actions?” she says. So, she and her children, ages 3 and 6, wrote a thank-you note and slipped it into Mauller’s mailbox.
Mauller, an aspiring pilot who is studying flight technology at Kent State University, says she can relate to Clawson. “Strangers have bought me coffee in the past, and I always wished I could have thanked them,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle, adding that she nearly cried when she read Clawson’s note.
So that evening, Mauller went door-to-door in search of Clawson, and when the women met in person, they hugged. Mauller says strangers on Twitter have sent her $150, which she spent on a Starbucks card for Clawson (“I’m giving it to her tonight”), and she’s offered her babysitting services.
Mauller has exemplified selflessness for Clawson’s children. “Now my kids want to pay it forward,” she says. “Mackenzie makes me proud as a mom.”

Guided Bomb Fragments At Site Of Yemen Bus Airstrike Trace Back To Lockheed Martin
A prominent Yemeni journalist who throughout the war has been instrumental in getting images and information out of the country ahead of Western journalists has photographed and examined fragments from one of the exploded missiles found at the site of the US-Saudi coalition airstrike on a school bus in Yemen, which left as many as 50 people dead and 63 injured — the vast majority of which were children.
The image of the missile fragment, believed to be among those that scored a direct hit on the bus full of children traveling through Dahyan market in Saada province last Thursday, was uploaded by Sanaa-based Hussain Albukhaiti and quickly spread online over the weekend. It appears to be a US-made MK-82 guided bomb produced by Lockheed Martin.
Ben Norton, an American journalist among the first to track down publicly available government contract information showing the MK-82's likely origins, said of the bomb fragment imagery: "Yemeni journalists found this fragment of the bomb Saudi Arabia dropped on a school bus full of children in Yemen. It's a US-made MK-82 guided bomb, which has been used in previous attacks on Yemeni civilians. The cage code on the bomb is Lockheed Martin's."
