Recep Tayyip Erdogan became Prime Minister of Turkey in 2003. His AKP party had won a major election victory in 2002, but Erdogan was banned from political office until his predecessor Gül annulled the ban. Which he had gotten in 1997 for reciting an old poem to which he had added the lines “The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers….”

The Turkish courts of the time saw this as “an incitement to violence and religious or racial hatred..” and sentenced him to ten months in prison (of which he served four in 1999). The courts saw Erdogan as a threat to the secular Turkish state as defined by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey in the 1920’s. Erdogan is trying to both turn the nation towards Islam and at the same time not appearing to insult Ataturk.

Egyptian court sentences Muslim Brotherhood leader to life in prison

A court in Egypt has sentenced the chairman of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and other senior leaders of the movement to life in prison over charges of alleged incitement to murder and violence during protest rallies five years ago.

The Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie received life sentence from the Giza Criminal Court on Sunday, along with some other top leaders of the movement, including Mohamed el-Beltagy, Safwat Hegazy, Essam el-Erian and al-Husseini Antar.

The rulings are the latest among several trials and retrials against Badie and other senior leaders of the Brotherhood that ruled the African country before the military, led by incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, ousted the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, following mass protests in 2013.

The court on Sunday also sentenced Bassem Ouda, the former supply minister under Morsi's rule, to 15 years in jail. It also sentenced the movement’s prominent figures Hisham Kamel, Gamal Fathi, and Ahmed Dahi to 10 years in prison over charges of alleged incitement to commit violent acts in the protests.

All of the convicted leaders have the right to appeal the court ruling one final time.

US can’t force trade rules on others, Germany must invest more in Iran – economy minister

Washington cannot dictate trade rules to others, Germany’s economy minister said, adding that his country should be more assertive and defy American sanctions – particularly by investing more in Iran.

“We don’t let Washington dictate [their will] on trade relations with other countries,” German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier told Bild newspaper on Saturday. He said the US sanctions on Iran are one instance in which America’s neglect of its partners are clearly shown.

Therefore, Germany and other European countries should feel free to pursue improved relations with Tehran. “German businesses can continue to invest as much as they want in Iran,” Altmaier said, adding, however, that “many companies depend on loans from banks, most of which refinance themselves in the US – and it creates problems.”

Altmaier’s words come after the Trump administration imposed a second round of sanctions targeting Iran’s purchase of US dollars, despite pleas from some world powers. Earlier this year, Washington slapped Tehran with sanctions aimed at curtailing trade as well as the energy and shipbuilding industries.

These restrictions have damaged EU ties with Iran, which flourished after the milestone 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by the US. Last week, the EU responded to the latest Iran sanctions by calling on companies to disregard threats from the US. Apart from the issue of Iran, the US and Europe are locked in a dispute over tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

With that in mind, the German minister said, the world now risks sliding into an all-out economic conflict, adding that “we are just a few yards from the edge,” and “a global trade war would not know winners, only losers.” Politicians have no right to jeopardize hundreds of thousands of European jobs that depend on US-EU trade, he stated.

“We have learnt from the past that mostly customers are suffering from trade wars as goods and services are getting more expensive,” Altmaier said. “This trade war hampers economic growth and brings new uncertainties.”

Back US on Iran sanctions or face 'serious consequences' for business – ambassador to UK

In the latest threat to the US-UK special relationship, the US' top diplomat in Britain has called on London to back its pressure on Iran, warning of "serious consequences" for businesses who flaunt Washington's sanctions.

Accusing Iran of "squandering its money on proxy wars and malign activities abroad," US Ambassador Woody Johnson's op-ed in the Sunday Telegraph asked the UK to "use its considerable diplomatic power and influence" to join the US "as a united front" in its effort to secure "a genuinely comprehensive agreement" on Iran ending its nuclear program.

Reiterating a threat made by his boss, US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, Johnson added that: "The President has been explicit: any businesses that put their commercial interests in Iran ahead of the global good will risk serious consequences for their trade with the US."

Earlier this week, British Minister for Middle East Affairs Alistair Burt backed the current deal negotiated with Iran, rejecting the idea that the UK would "go along with" the US.

"We made it clear that we regard the nuclear deal as an important part of the region's security. We think this is really important, sticking to a deal a number of partners have agreed to," he said.

The US position was further undermined by an unnamed UK minister who accused Trump of simply throwing "red meat" to his support base, calling the sanctions strategy counter-productive, according to the Telegraph.

Johnson's plea comes days after US President Donald Trump upped sanctions on Iran after the US withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, in May. The historic deal, backed by the US, Russia, and China, and negotiated by the EU, saw the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran for ditching its nuclear program.

Calling the renewed sanctions "the most biting ever imposed," Trump also threatened via Twitter that "anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States."

The US pullout has been met with disbelief by European allies, who issued a statement on Monday committing to the 2015 deal and encouraged investors to maintain business ties with Iran. UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt was among the signatories.

On Saturday, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier told Bild newspaper that "we don't let Washington dictate [their will] on trade relations with other countries," labeling the US sanctions as one instance in which America's neglect of its partners was clearly shown.

The latest US-EU disagreement comes at a diplomatic low point between Washington and the bloc, who are already locked in a dispute over tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. A tense NATO summit in July also saw Trump beat up on allies over their defense spending and accused Germany of being a "captive" of Russia.
