Florida child welfare head quitting next month

TALLAHASSEE — The head of Florida’s child welfare department will resign next month.

Department of Children and Families Secretary Mike Carroll sent a letter Friday to Gov. Rick Scott, saying he will leave office Sept. 6, four months before the next governor could have picked a replacement. Carroll has worked at the agency for 28 years and took over in 2014.

He did not say why he is leaving.

DCF has long been troubled. The Miami Herald earlier this year found 477 children have died since 2008 after their families came under DCF investigation. A Tampa Bay Times and Sarasota Herald-Tribune investigation in 2015 found that 15 patients had died and almost 1,000 had been hurt at the state’s mental facilities.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Often it's the United States giving financial aid to disaster-stricken nations. But now Jacksonville is set to get $2.7 million in foreign aid to help parts of the city hardest hit by Hurricane Irma.

The grant funding is part of a larger relief effort from the United Arab Emirates that would award a total of $10 million to storm-ravaged communities throughout the state of Florida.

"This is what friends do for each other in times of need, and is why the UAE is excited to be working with Jacksonville on a proposal that would help communities across the city," said UAE Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba in a statement given to the Jacksonville Daily Record.

Marsha Oliver, spokesperson for Mayor Lenny Curry, said the city was invited to apply for the grant, which was awarded after UAE representatives visited in March.

"We are incredibly delighted for this opportunity to help rebuild and strengthen citizens and communities most impacted by Hurricane Irma," Oliver said in part

A SENIOR Church of England bishop last night called for a near-total ban on the wearing of burkas in public.

The former Bishop of Rochester Michael Nazir-Ali said burkas and niqabs should be outlawed in hospitals, GP surgeries and schools.

And he said for “reasons of national security alone” the burka should not be allowed in Parliament or even town halls.

“We have all seen how even male terrorists have escaped arrest by donning a burka and making an effective getaway,” he told the Mail on Sunday.

He added: “It is true that some women choose to wear the burka or niqab because they feel it makes them more observant Muslims.

“It is also true however that the burka or niqab is being weaponised by Islamists to impose what they consider to be ‘Islamic’ character on communities, neighbourhoods and even nations."

Florida high school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz can be heard begging to be killed and saying he has demonic voices in his head in disturbing new footage.

In the haunting footage the 19-year-old is seen pointing two fingers at his head in a gun-like gesture as he tells himself: “you deserve this because you’re worthless”.

The video was released by police after they interrogated the suspect.

Cruz faces 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 of attempted murder after the 14 February mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland.

Both the video and transcript were edited to remove Cruz's direct confession to the massacre that killed 17 people, authorities said on Wednesday before the video was released.

Several hours of video showed Cruz and Broward Sheriff's Detective John Curcio in a police interrogation room.

Cruz, dressed in hospital clothing and not handcuffed, initially speaks so softly Curcio repeatedly urges him to talk louder.

Much of their conversation focused on what Cruz insisted was a voice that told him things like "burn, kill, destroy."

Cruz also mutters "kill me" when Curcio is out of the room. He faces the death penalty if convicted.
