My mother escaped communism from East Germany when she was 9. She had to travel on a train alone to get to the West, and start a new life. Her alternative was to be kept behind a wall and shot if she spoke out.
I spent my younger years living in fear of communism in the cold war. We were told that we could be nuked at any time and the alternative was a cold dark future of totalitarianism.
