My thoughts on the pilot.

He didn't talk like he had to go sacrifice himself for the mission in a few minutes. He seemed sane and a little excited.

Few words on potential suicide were quite rudiculous, and not at all followed upon by him.

That makes me think he survived as planned . The jets knew plan of course.
