IN-Sen: Incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly supports giving Trump upward of $5 billion for border wall

Incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-In.) said that he supports giving President Donald Trump upward of $5 billion dollars toward border wall construction.

What are the details?

Donnelly, who is up for re-election in November and is facing businessman and former Republican state Rep. Mike Braun, has sided with Trump on funding for the border wall, according to Politico report Wednesday.

Donnelly’s support of funding the border wall breaks with many of his fellow Democrats who are opposed to providing funding to the project.

Donnelly, who has voted with the president 50 percent of the time, also voted to confirm Trump’s first Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch, in 2017.

Donnelly is set to meet with the president’s second SCOTUS pick, Brett Kavanaugh, on Wednesday.

According to Politico, Donnelly appears to support allocating funds toward the border wall in order to prevent a government shutdown.

The president has threatened a government shutdown this fall if he does not receive the promise of adequate funding for the wall construction.

“I’m fine with providing him some more,” Donnelly said. “I actually voted for border wall funding three different times. I’m fine with that. I’m fine with $3, $3.5, $4, or $5 billion this fall.”

Although estimates vary widely, most estimates have suggested that the border wall would cost at least $20 billion to fully construct.

Braun, who is a vocal Trump supporter, told the outlet that he’s skeptical about Donnelly’s notion of funding.

“My gut would tell me he wasn’t saying that nine, 10 months ago,” Braun said. “He’s going to probably even be cut some slack by his base so he can stay alive and have a chance of staying in contention.”

Indiana’s Senate election in November is one of 10 “most likely to flip in 2018,” CNN noted in January.

At the time of this writing, the Cook Political Report calls the race a toss-up.

Donnelly and Braun will face off in their first debate on Oct. 8. The second debate is set for Oct. 30.

TN-Sen: Dem congressman makes controversial comments about Marsha Blackburn. She responds.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), a candidate for the U.S. Senate, is punching back after a Democratic colleague, Rep. Steve Cohen (Tenn.), made some controversial comments about her.

What did Cohen say?

The Tennessee Democrat was caught on audio saying he wished President Donald Trump would instruct Blackburn to jump off a local bridge, implying her loyalty to the president would force her to follow through with such a directive.

“The big orange president …. He’s going to come down here and he is going to endorse Marsha Blackburn, because Marsha Blackburn, if he says, ‘Jump off the Harahan Bridge,’ she’ll jump off the Harahan Bridge,” Cohen said, according to HuffPost.

“I wish he’d say that,” Cohen added, inciting laughter from the audience.

Cohen’s comments came during a community prayer breakfast at a church in Memphis last month, HuffPost reported. Blackburn’s opponent, former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen (D), hosted the breakfast.

However, in follow-up comments to HuffPost, Cohen claimed his remarks were only meant as a joke, and that he really did not wish Blackburn harm.

“It was obviously humor. I wish her no harm. I hope she doesn’t get the Senate. And I wish she wasn’t a lackey for Trump. But I don’t wish her physical harm,” he claimed.

How did Blackburn respond?

“It’s hurtful to hear that,” Blackburn said on Fox News Friday.

“When you hear something like that, it is hurtful. And of course, we haven’t received an apology. He did say he was ‘joking’ but I got to tell you, there’s an old adage that my grandmother used to say, and it was: ‘Never injure a friend, even in jest,'” she explained.

“I think also the fact that this was said in a church, at a prayer breakfast that, that’s a little bit, that ads to it also,” she added.

Blackburn also called Cohen’s apology a “backhanded statement.”

Trump Signs Massive Defense Bill: Biggest Pay Raise For Soldiers In Nine Years

On Monday, President Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, a bill authorizing an increase of over 15,000 troops as well as a long-overdue pay raise for soldiers. The military spending package includes $717 billion for national defense in the next fiscal year, according to the White House.

The additional soldiers will be divvied up this way: 487,500 for the Army, 335,400 in the Navy, 186,100 in the Marine Corps, and 329,100 in the Air Force.

In addition, $7.6 billion will fund 77 F-35 fighter jets and $24.1 billion for the building of 12 new battle force ships.

The White House authorized 2.6% pay raise for soldiers, terming it "the largest pay raise in nine years."

President Trump, who signed the bill, during a visit to Fort Drum in upstate New York, stated, “After years of devastating cuts, we are rebuilding our military like we never have before. Our bases and vital equipment were allowed to fall into a state of disrepair, …but those days are over.”

Stars and Stripes noted, ”Trump’s signature marks the first on-time passage of the NDAA in 22 years with the start of the 2019 fiscal year on Oct. 1.”

Visitors to the famous church say they suffered from 'severe headaches' and 'tingling.'

Catholics visiting the famous Parisian cathedral, Notre Dame, say they are experiencing a range of physical problems after touching what they believe was tainted holy water, in the fonts at the church's entrance.

Catholics typically make the "sign of the cross" with holy water when entering and exiting churches.

But The Sun reports that Paris churchgoers suffered severe headaches" and "tingling faces" after dabbing the holy water on their foreheads, on their way into a Saturday evening church service.

"They complained of tingling in the face after signing themselves with the holy water at the entrance of the church," a source told the French newspaper, Le Parisian. Others say the holy water had a "foul" smell.

Parisian officials say they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, but they are concerned about the reports, as Notre Dame has been a prominent terrorist target for years. Just last year, police shot a would-be attacker, who claimed to be a "soldier of ISIS," outside the cathedral.

The cathedral's caretakers emptied the fonts, bleached and scrubbed the containers, and replaced the holy water on Sunday to avoid any further injury.

Washington Freezes Open Sky Treaty With Moscow in New Defense Bill

US President Donald Trump signed the $716 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the fiscal year 2019 at Fort Drum, New York on Monday.

The bill funds the Department of Defense as well as funding to accelerate US efforts to field a conventional prompt strike capability before 2022, $6.3 billion for the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI), and will obligate Defense Secretary James Mattis to submit a plan to Congress that would stop Turkey from getting F-35 aircraft if it purchases the Russian S-400 air defense system.

The measure also includes $250 million in lethal defensive items for Ukraine.

Moreover, according to the NDAA, Trump must submit a report to the US Congress by January 2019 regarding whether Russia is in breach of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

"Not later than January 15, 2019, the President shall submit to the appropriate congressional committees a determination whether — (1) the Russian federation is in material breach of its obligations under the INF Treaty; and (2) the prohibitions set forth in Article VI of the INF Treaty remain binding on the United States as a matter of United States law," the NDAA said.

Meanwhile, the bill reinforces US partnership with Israel and authorizes co-production of missile defense systems as well as enhances US support for European partners against Russia by funding the European Deterrence Initiative, according to the White House.
