It’s hard not to conclude that many of the more hawkish neocons that Trump has (mistakenly, in my view) appointed to top jobs are actively working to undermine the president’s stated agenda. Especially when it seems Trump is trying to seek dialogue with countries the neocons see as adversaries needing to be regime-changed.

China defends crackdown on Muslims amid reports of internment camps
Beijing is defending itself over allegations that China is holding more than 1 million Muslims in internment camps.
What do the reports say?
On Friday, vice-chair of the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Gay McDougall, said: “In the name of combating religious extremism and maintaining social stability (China) has changed the Uighur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internment camp.”
McDougall cited reports that more that 1 million Uighurs are being detained in the region. The Uighurs, an ethnic Muslim minority, make up about 45 percent of China’s northeast Xinjiang province.
Nongovernment organizations, such as the Chinese Human Rights Defenders, asked the U.N. committee to press Beijing further about reports of “disappearing individuals to force them to undergo ideological ‘re-education.'”
The human rights groups claim that another 1.3 million people have been forced to attend “re-education classes.”
An article in the Washington Post on Friday contained accounts from individuals who said they had been held in detention centers in China. One source said prisoners were forced to sit for hours singing songs with refrains like “The Communist Party is good. The Communist Party is good.”
How did China respond?
The Global Times, a Chinese state-run newspaper, posted an op-ed over the weekend to address the claims. The piece said that Xinjiang “suffered a series of violent terrorist attacks” over the past few years,” and insisted that the province “has been salvaged from the verge of mass turmoil.”
“It has avoided the fate of becoming ‘China’s Syria’ or ‘China’s Libya,'” the op-ed said.
The editorial also blamed the Western media for drumming up accusations of human rights violations against the country, and added that “the turnaround in Xinjiang’s security situation has avoided a great tragedy and saved countless lives.”
Chinese officials addressed the allegations on Monday, with one delegate telling the U.N. panel in Geneva that the “re-education centers” were for “criminals involved only in minor offenses.”
But the delegation acknowledged to the U.N. on Monday that while the Uighurs have full rights, “those deceived by religious extremism … shall be assisted by resettlement and re-education.”

In a public demonstration of their desire to gain increased access to China, Apple’s Tim Cook and Google’s Sundar Pichai made their first appearance at China’s World Internet Conference last year.
Bloomberg reporter Peter Elstrom attended the conference. When he was asked if there would be any change in the Chinese government stance on censorship in the future, he responded by saying,
“The implication comes at a time when the U.S. is wrestling with fake news on Facebook and Twitter, allegations about Russians hacking an election, and they feel like this Chinese approach has some merit, so they are making that case.”

Rival Chicago-area gangs unite to build playground for kids after calling for a cease-fire
The city of Chicago made alarming headlines last weekend when more than 70 people were shot and at least 12 killed during the bloodiest weekend of the year.
Over the weekend, members of rival gangs made the news, but not for reasons many might presume. The two gangs united to celebrate peace by building a new playground for the children who live in the North Pullman neighborhood where shootings had, until recently, been a common occurrence, WBBM-TV reported.
Last fall, the two gangs, which live within blocks of each other, called for a cease-fire to the turf war that had been going on for many years.
What’s the story?
The rival gangs said they had grown weary of the violence that plagued the neighborhood and kept their children indoors.
“It was a lot of shooting going on,” gang member Sherman Scullarck told WBBM. “Kids couldn’t come outside — shooting back and forth.”
In October, Scullarck helped broker the cease-fire between the two gangs.
“Several young men have been shot, some kill over a gang war that none of them even knew what they were fighting about,” Chicago Police detective Vivian Williams told WBBM.
Following the truce, Williams helped the gangs connect with Chicago CRED, an organization focused on reducing gun violence, which led to peace between them and the reward of a new playground.
“We’re working directly with the young men on the south and west sides most likely to shoot and be shot,” said Arne Duncan, one of the creators of Chicago CRED and former secretary of education under President Barack Obama. “They didn’t ask for anything for themselves. They said ‘Our kids have no place to play. Can you help us build a playground?’”
Together, the rival gang members, along with dozens of volunteers, and help from some corporate sponsors built a playground where the children of both gangs can play together and have hope for a better future.
What did the gang members say?
Eight months later, the children can go outside without fear.
“It’s peace going on now,” Scullarck told the news outlet. “They really could play — they don’t need to worry about anything.”
Another gang member who asked WBBM not to use his identity said the last eight months has been “wonderful.”
“You get to hang out, sit on the porch and not have to feel somebody’s jumping out of the car and start shooting,” he added.
The playground will be a place where the kids can create friendships instead of war.
“The kids can have somewhere to play peacefully and both sides can come and enjoy themselves,” said another gang member who asked to remain anonymous. “And be kids and not have to worry about dodging bullets and none of the nonsense. And they won’t have to follow in none of our footsteps.”

Tom Steyer: Impeach Trump for ‘Corruption’
Left-wing impeachment activist Tom Steyer believes Democrats should try to impeach President Donald Trump for “corruption” instead of anything related to “Russia collusion.”
Steyer reportedly told BuzzFeed reporters on Sunday evening about a “previously undisclosed survey of 200,000 people” that his Need to Impeach group conducted. The survey reportedly found that “30% of respondents said the president should be impeached for corruption.”
Steyer reportedly alleged that Trump is “the most corrupt president in American history, somebody who is breaking the law on a daily basis.”
The billionaire’s remarks also reveal that even the most anti-Trump left-wing activists may not care as much about the so-called “Russia collusion” narrative that the media have been intent on trying to push since Trump got elected.
Though left-wing politicians from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have cautioned Democrats against running on impeachment in 2018, with Pelosi even saying that doing so would be a “gift” to Republicans, Steyer is reportedly ramping up his so-called $110 million “impeachment army” with 1,000 staff members and at least 2,000 volunteers across his organizations.
On Monday, Steyer announced that he would be adding another $10 million to his efforts to get Trump impeached even though a majority of voters in numerous polls conducted since April have said they oppose impeaching Trump.
Steyer has compared the movement to impeach Trump to the civil rights movement and has argued that Democrats need to embrace the impeachment movement to take back Congress in 2018.

Anti-Trump Figures Destroy Omarosa: She's 'Evil,' 'A Liar,' 'Not Credible'
Multiple anti-Trump figures have surprisingly come out and slammed former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman over many of her recent claims in her new tell-all book. This came after she had revealed that she secretly recorded conversations in highly-sensitive areas in the White House, raising serious national security concerns.
Numerous claims made by Newman, who was fired from the White House in February, have already been challenged, including the claim that Trump used the "n-word" and used racial slurs to describe Kellyanne Conway's husband, George Conway.
Newman has already made contradictory statements about Trump's alleged use of the "n-word," initially claiming in the book that someone had told her about a tape that existed where Trump was heard using the term, but then claiming on NPR that she actually heard the tape.
Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), is one of the many anti-Trump figures to come out and attack Newman over her claims.
"I am not buying this," Steele told MSNBC's Katy Tur, after getting into a Twitter spat with Newman. "It’s about book sales."
Frank Luntz, who does focus groups that are often televised, is another Trump critic who slammed Newman over the claims that involved him.
Some of Trump's most intense critics in the media also shot down Newman's credibility, including CNN's April Ryan, Ana Navarro, and Brian Stelter.

Citigroup Says Global Card Chief Linville Leaving in Shakeup
NEW YORK—Citigroup Inc. said on Aug. 13 that Jud Linville, the head of global cards and consumer services, is leaving the company as part of a reorganization of executives in its global consumer banking businesses.
David Chubak, currently global retail banking head, will also oversee global branded cards and consumer lending, the bank said. Anand Selva, the current head of consumer banking in Asia, will become head of U.S. consumer banking, including branded cards, digital banking and wealth management.
The changes were described in a memo from Stephen Bird, chief executive of Citigroup’s global consumer banking business.
Linville, formerly of American Express Co., had been at Citigroup for eight years and had streamlined the company’s line up of cards. But in recent years, the division has failed to meet targets after encountering stiff competition from JPMorgan Chase & Co for premium card customers and after outbidding American Express for the card business of retailer Costco.
Linville did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Bird said in the memo that the reorganization was designed to “harmonize” the operations of Citigroup’s global consumer banking businesses.
Citigroup said in July 2017 it expected the global consumer banking businesses to provide much of the profit growth it expects by 2020.
Anand has been with Citigroup for 26 years, the last three of which he has been responsible for the consumer business in 17 countries, primarily in Asia, Bird said.
Citigroup has said it is bringing to the United States advanced digital consumer banking tools that it developed in Asia. The bank is setting out this year to market a digital banking app across the United State to people who live far from its branches, which are located around just six U.S. cities. It hopes the digital move will bring in more deposits and support its Citigold accounts for wealthier individuals.
Bird said the changes align the U.S. business with the model Citigroup uses in Asia and Mexico that has produced “cross-product synergies, greater collaboration and accelerated speed to market and decision-making.”
