Breaking News: Catholic leaders across Pennsylvania covered up the sexual abuse of more than 1,000 children by priests over 70 years, a grand jury found

Bishops and other leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by hundreds of priests over a period of 70 years, persuading victims not to report the abuse and police officers not to investigate it, according to a report issued by a grand jury on Tuesday.

The report, which says there were more than 1,000 identifiable victims and covered six of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses, is the broadest examination yet by a government agency in the United States of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. There have been ten previous reports by grand juries and attorneys general in the United States, according to the research and advocacy group BishopAccountability.org, but those examined single dioceses or counties.

The report catalogs horrific instances of abuse, including a priest who raped a young girl in the hospital after she had her tonsils out, and another priest who was allowed to stay in ministry after impregnating a 17-year-old girl, faking a marriage certificate and then divorcing the girl.

Jury decides on death sentence for Jordanian immigrant convicted of two ‘honor killings’

A Harris County jury on Tuesday decided the punishment for Jordanian immigrant Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan, sentencing him to death for a pair of 2012 “honor killings” that shocked Houston.

Irsan, 60, was earlier found guilty of capital murder for the November 2012 shooting death of his daughter’s husband shortly after their marriage. Only 11 months earlier, he arranged the ambush slaying of a young Iranian medical researcher who was a close friend of his daughter, according to testimony.

Boy, 11, hacks into replica U.S. vote website in minutes at convention

An 11-year-old boy managed to hack into a replica of Florida's election results website in 10 minutes and change names and tallies during a hackers convention, organizers said, stoking concerns about security ahead of nationwide votes.

The boy was the quickest of 35 children, ages 6 to 17, who all eventually hacked into copies of the websites of six swing states during the three-day Def Con security convention over the weekend, the event said on Twitter on Tuesday.

The event was meant to test the strength of U.S. election infrastructure and details of the vulnerabilities would be passed onto the states, it added.
