Two essential points to keep in mind, as we process all of this:
1) The presumed neutrality and objectivity of the journalistic community is what we base virtually all of our informed decisions upon and
2) The infiltration of the journalistic community by intelligence agencies is widespread and well-documented.
When it comes down to it, a big piece of the puzzle here is Ethical Journalism, i.e. journalists who are not in the pocket of any particular interest or agency. Journalists who practice a clergy-like adherence to ethical standards which precludes willing cooperation with any intelligence agency or similar institution.
