Here's an open question about Geo-Tagging, Geo-Tracking, Geo-Location and so forth.

In the past year, Google Maps, when tracking your location while travelling, started showing up ugly purple triangles in the primary display.

Does this UI change mean anything? Is it related to a change of system or algorithm?

Here's a SkyKing (channel 5 in Seattle) video for comparison – there are a couple shots of the island as a whole (beginning, after 4:00). Doesn't seem to match up to your pic at all, unless foreshortening/perspective is extreme (has to be because of the mainland in background – island not oriented parllell to it in your pic)
