Kareem Abdul Jabbar: National Anthem Just Like Songs Of Slavery
"Slaves are generally expected to sing as well as to work."
President Trump is just like the oppressors who forced their slaves to sing patriotic songs, according to NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Writing in The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, the former basketball star likened the debate over NFL players singing the National Anthem to slaves who were forced to sing while they work.
"Slaves are generally expected to sing as well as to work." Abdul-Jabbar wrote, adding they would often sing their "oppressor’s feel-good songs."
"Currently, the song being demanded is the national anthem during football games," wrote Abul-Jabbar. "But during a warm-up game on Aug. 10, despite President Trump's previous condemnation, several Eagles players kneeled during the anthem or raised their fists — their way of singing their own song."
Abdul-Jabbar says those players using the anthem to protest still love their country, but demand it lives up to its principles.
"For them, lyrics like ‘land of the free’ don't accurately represent the daily reality for people of color," he continued. "They love their country but want that country to recognize the suffering that occurs when it isn't living up to its constitutional promises."
On President Trump saying the NFL players were outraged at something they were "unable to define," the former NBA star called him a "privileged darling of white supremacists."
"Who would know better how to define their outrage: the privileged darling of white supremacists, the 94 percent-white team owners, the 75 percent-white head coaches or the 70 percent-black players who actually take the field each week?" Abdul-Jabbar rhetorically asked.
Fox News noted that the basketball star's words here match what he said last year when he praised the NFL protesters during the height of the anthem controversy.
"They have evolved from quiet protest and heckling sarcasm, to respected leaders informing the public about what's at stake" he wrote in 2017. "And in doing so, perhaps change the downward social spiral we are in."

Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham Commander Threatens Lavrov, Vows To “Cut The Feet” Of Any Soldier Attacking Idlib
On August 15, Abu al-Fath al-Farghaly, a senior commander of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), warned Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, that the radical group will “cut the feet” of any soldier who attacks the northern governorate of Idlib.
“The Mujahedeen are in their strongest physical and moral status and their will won’t decline for a moment until the liberation of Damascus and beyond,” al-Farghaly said in an open letter to Lavrov, according to the HTS-linked news agency Iba’a.
A day earlier, Lavrov said during a joint news conference in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has the right to defend itself against attacks in Idlib. The Russian foreign minister also noted that the de-escalation agreement in northern Syria don’t include terrorist groups.
Lavrov’s statement clearly triggered HTS’ leadership, who believed that the de-escalation agreement and Turkey will protect their remaining strongholds in northern Syria.
Many Syrian activists mocked al-Farghaly warning because HTS was badly defeated and its so called “Mujahedeen” run away in all the recent battles with the SAA. This warning is likely meant to calm down HTS-supporters in northern Syria who are panicking over the upcoming attack of the SAA.

Radioactive sheep boost claims of secret Israeli nuke test
Radioactive isotopes discovered by scientists in Australian sheep have added gravity to longstanding claims that a mysterious flash above the Indian Ocean 39 years ago was actually an illegal Israeli nuclear weapon test.
On September 22, 1979, US satellite Vela 6911 detected a ‘double flash’ near the Marion and Prince Edward Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Ever since, there has been speculation that it was actually a nuclear weapon test carried out by Israel. According to the memoirs of then-US President Jimmy Carter, this was also the assumption of American generals who briefed him on the incident. The official position of the Israeli state is to neither confirm nor deny having a homegrown military nuclear program.
Now a new paper, published in the Science & Global Security journal, says radioactive isotope iodine-131 had been discovered in the thyroids of Australian sheep in the month following the so-called ‘Vela incident.’
Christopher Wright of the Australian Defense Force Academy and nuclear physicist Lars-Erik De Geer, who used to work for the Swedish Defense Research Agency, have analyzed thyroid samples that were sent monthly to the US in 1979. The information on test results was only recently made available to the public under the Freedom of Information Act.
The isotope levels found in the sheep affected by rain four days after the incident, “would be consistent with them having grazed in the path of a potential radioactive fallout plume from a 22 September low-yield nuclear test in the Southern Indian Ocean,” the paper states.
The researchers said that the analysis of weather patterns suggests the fallout plume from a nuclear explosion would have carried over from the test site in the Indian Ocean to parts of Australian territory.

The assumption that a nuclear test took place in 1979 is also backed by the analysis of the declassified “hydroacoustic signal” from US underwater listening devices, the study added.
The research “removes virtually all doubt that the 'flash' was a nuclear explosion,” Leonard Weiss, nuclear weapons expert from the Stanford University, wrote in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
He pinpointed Israel as the responsible party because it was “the only country that had the technical ability and policy motivation to carry out such a clandestine test.” According to Weiss, it was just one of several aerial nuclear explosions performed by the Jewish state, which was detected by the US satellite due to an unexpected change in the cloud cover.
Researchers say the Israeli test was carried out in violation of the Limited Test Ban Treaty from 1963, and urge a large-scale international probe of the incident.
Israeli Ambassador to New Zealand Itzhak Gerberg denied the findings of the research in a comment to the New Zealand Herald, calling them “simply a ridiculous assumption that does not hold water.”

California paying prisoners $1 per hour plus time off sentences to battle wildfires
As wildfires rage across California, the state is combating the flames with every available resource — including incarcerated citizens.
How does that work?
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation operates a volunteer firefighting program that allows prisoners the opportunity to earn income and time off their sentences in exchange for their labor.
CDCR has run inmate labor camps since 1915, and the first firefighting program was launched in 1945. More than 2,000 inmates are currently fighting fires in California.
Volunteer inmates must be nonviolent offenders, and cannot have prior convictions for arson or sexual crimes. The state houses participants in “conservation camps” spread across 29 counties, where they perform manual labor like clearing brush and sand bagging.
Firefighting prisoners are paid $2 per day and an additional $1 an hour when battling active fires. They make up nearly 40 percent of firefighters in California, which the CDCR claims saves taxpayers somewhere between $90 and $100 million annually.
Inmates are also able to shave time off their sentences through volunteering, according to a spokesman for the corrections department. Bill Sessa, a spokesman for the corrections department, told CNN that inmates at conservation camps receive two days off their sentences for every one day of good behavior.
But participation in these types of programs is not risk-free. In an interview with WBUR-FM, the director of the ACLU’s National Prison Project, David Fathi said, “At least two [inmate firefighters] have died in California. Six prisoner firefighters died in a single fire in Arizona back in the ’90s. So this is not a theoretical concern. This is very dangerous work.”

The fires currently ravaging the Golden State have been deadly. Six firefighters have lost their lives this season in California. One firefighter from Utah was killed Monday while fighting the Mendocino Complex fire, which has grown to be the largest wildfire in California’s history.
According to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski, conditions may worsen as more than 100 fires currently burn in the U.S., mostly in drought-stricken Western states.
In a report published Wednesday, Sosnowski wrote, “Multiple soaking rainstorms are needed to alleviate the wildfire danger. Even a fraction of the rain the Eastern and Central states have been receiving would help. However, hope for these types of storms are months away for California, much of Oregon, Nevada and Utah.”

Germany, Qatar vow support for Turkey amid US pressure
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani have expressed support for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan amid escalated tensions between Ankara and Washington.
In a Wednesday phone conversation with Erdogan, the German chancellor expressed her country’s commitment to strengthening its cooperation with Turkey through reciprocal visits at the highest levels, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency quoted presidential sources as saying.
The two sides discussed Erdogan's upcoming visit to Berlin slated for late September, and a meeting between Turkey's Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak and Germany's Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, due to be held in coming days.
According to the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, Merkel also underlined her country's concern for a strong Turkish economy, repeating her Monday comments that Turkey’s economic prosperity “serves Germany’s interests”.
Her remarks come as US President Donald Trump's punitive measures against Turkey have pushed its lira into freefall and sent shudders through its financial markets.

Ex-Archbishop Wilson to serve sentence in home detention
Former Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson will serve his sentence for concealing child sex abuse in home detention.
Former Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson will not go to jail for covering up child sex abuse by a pedophile priest in the NSW Hunter region.
In handing down his sentence in Newcastle Local Court magistrate Robert Stone on Tuesday decided Wilson, 67, should serve his 12-month custodial sentence in home detention, not jail.
Mr Stone was persuaded by a report by the Gosford Community Corrections office which found Wilson was suitable for home detention.
He ordered Wilson be detained at his sister's home near Newcastle for at least six months, when he'll be eligible for parole.
Wilson, who was forced to resign as Archbishop of Adelaide in July after becoming the most senior Catholic clergyman in the world to be convicted of concealing child sex abuse, showed no emotion when the decision was handed down.

White House: US Not Removing Tariffs on Turkey Even if Pastor Brunson Released
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States will not remove steel and aluminum tariffs placed on Turkish imports even if Turkey decides to release American Pastor Andrew Brunson, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
"The tariffs that are in place on steel would not be removed with the release of Pastor Brunson. The tariffs are specific to national security. The sanctions, however, that have been placed on Turkey are specific to Pastor Brunson and others that we feel are being held unfairly and we would consider that at that point," Sanders told reporters.
The sanctions that could be removed were put in place against Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu over allegedly having "leading roles" in the imprisonment of US pastor Andrew Brunson as well as in other human rights abuses.
Sanders said that tariffs put in place earlier on Wednesday by Turkey were both regrettable and a step in the wrong direction.
While the United States imposed tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum, and then doubled them on Friday all because of national security concerns, Turkey imposed the levy on US products merely for retaliation, Sanders added.
Turkey jailed Brunson two years ago for his alleged ties to the movement founded by Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara has accused of orchestrating the 2016 failed military coup. In late July, Brunson was released from a Turkish prison and placed under house arrest.
