Speaking of perverts and pools:

"A pool in Wilmington's Burton Brown Winchester Park was renamed after former Vice President Joe Biden."

Very cringy article. Kids don't look happy.

Dedication highlights former VP's "commitment to civil rights."

"Former Vice President Joe Biden returned on Monday to a place he said helped shape his perspective on race relations: Prices Run Pool.

"I owe you all," said Biden at the event, surrounded by African-American children in their swimsuits. "I owe this neighborhood. I learned so, so much."

In a ceremony, the facility in Brown-Burton-Winchester Park was renamed the Joseph R. Biden Jr. Aquatic Center. The name change commemorates Biden's early connection to the pool where he was the only white lifeguard in the summer of 1962.

At the time, in an era of racial dissent, Biden said he was a suburban kid who wanted to broaden his personal network.

"I wanted to get more involved," he said. "I'd turn on the television and I'd see and listen to Dr. (Martin Luther) King and others, but I didn't know any black people. So, I wanted to work here." Biden said his dozen black fellow lifeguards "treated me as an equal," and they taught each other about race and privilege.

"They'd ask me questions — because I really was the only white guy they really knew — about things that just startled me," Biden said. "I remember one lifeguard asked if I had a five-gallon can for gasoline. I said 'No I don't. But what do you need it for?' He said, 'I'm going down to see my grandmom in North Carolina. We can't stop at most gas stations. They won't let us stop at most gas stations.' I learned a lot."

Biden said he also would come to learn from local black leaders like Herman Holloway Sr., the first black state senator in Delaware. After Biden graduated from law school, he got a "fancy job with the oldest law firm in the state" but quickly realized his talents could be better used elsewhere.

"The city was burning, and it was burning down here," said Biden from a podium near E. 23rd and N. Locust streets. "I couldn't do it. So, I quit and became a public defender."

Biden was a New Castle County Council member in 1969 before representing Delaware for 36 years as a U.S. senator. He is the 47th vice president of the United States.

"The neighborhood's always had my back, and God-willing, I've always had your back, and I'll always have it as long as I'm around," Biden said.

Mayor Mike Purzycki, who was a classmate of Biden's at the University of Delaware decades ago, said the gesture to rename the pool is a powerful one.

"It's not the Medal of Freedom, but for people around here, it means every bit as much, if not more," he said."
