The cemetery encompasses 113 acres (46 hectares), and is the property of the Moravian Church of Staten Island.

In the 19th century Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt gave the Moravian Church 8 1⁄2 acres (3.4 ha), and later his son William Henry Vanderbilt gave a further 4 acres (1.6 ha) and constructed the residence for the cemetery superintendent.

The Vanderbilt mausoleum, designed by Richard Morris Hunt and constructed in 1885–1886, is part of the family's private section within the cemetery. Their mausoleum is a replica of a Romanesque church in Arles, France. The landscaped grounds around the Vanderbilt mausoleum were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The Vanderbilt section is not open to the public.

The Vanderbilt Mausoleum ( Moravian Cemetary)

Cornelius Vanderbilt born to a Staten Island family that built a shipping and railroad empire was one of the wealthiest men in the world. He gave the Moravian cemetary about 9 acres in the 19th century. His son William gave 4 acres and constructed the residence for the Cemetary superintendent. Gloria Vanderbilt for those of you that wore her designer jeans is a relative. Cornelius was laid to rest near the main entrance to the Cemetary. He was later moved to a private section. The Vanderbilt Mausoleum was constructed in 1885 as a replica of a Romanesque church in Arles, France. There are 72 family members within the tomb.

Legend says, when visiting, out of respect bring flowers. respect was extremely important to Cornelius.
