how else do you expect to get the water out? By bucket?
Shower rooms have drains like that but how often do you see ropes like that in showers? and if it was a shower, where would the ropes be tied.?
The tile designs in the paintings could be artist trying to make the images more interesting rather than flat white tile.
I can't find anywhere that still has the ropes in use or even has a close facsimile
