Imagery of 14th Station: Jesus Placed in the Tomb
This image struck me as a stylized/symbolic version of one of the Catholic “Stations of the Cross” (Way of the Stations) which can be found in every Catholic Church depicting the scenes starting from “Jesus Being Condemned to Death” through the burial in the tomb. The final station, “Burial of Jesus in the Tomb” seems to be represented here:
Virgin Mary Image
Blessed Mother (not most attractive face) in mourning clothes with praying hands
Symbol on tunic (?) below pressed hands appears to show mother with child
Above the crown on the Blessed Mother’s head appears to be a globe and a cross atop that with the symbol of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (heart with flame)
Images either side of Crown
dice representing dice thrown to decide who would get Jesus's tunic instead of ripping what was created as one piece, small image on right represents tomb in the grotto
Jesus Image
Jesus after being carried to the tomb (after being brought down from the cross), before being cleansed and covered with a cloth – appears to be in a case as opposed to prostrate on a slab
Jesus sorrowfully adored by two angels perhaps representing the angels who greet Peter and John at the tomb after the Resurrection or perhaps Jesus’ guardian angel and angel sent by God the Father to console Him at Gethsemane
Cloth wrapped around Jesus loins shown behind the head of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Left of the Virgin Mary
Ladder used to bring Jesus down from the cross with face of Joseph of Arimithea superimposed on it (when enlarged, the object under the face appears to be an arm (flaccid as when a dead body is being carried) or at least a hand
Right of the Virgin Mary
Bird image might represent the cock who crowed after Peter’s denial (denied thrice before cock crowed twice)
Spear projecting upward (from behind cock) to the left may represent the spear that pierced the side and heart of Jesus
Spear projecting upward to the right may represent what was used to scourge Jesus (bit of a stretch but since it looks like the material is some rough felt that may be the closest the artist could get)
Below the cock appears to be a stick with a flame showing it was getting dark or dark in the tomb
Encircled Images either side of the crown of Mary
Emptied cross on left, image of men carrying Jesus to the tomb on the right
Box above the main box (shown in another version/picture)
Image of the Holy Spirit, Spouse of the Blessed Mother
Anons can probably find more imagery but that's all I found at first glance without research. Sorry if it was already covered.
