A photo (polaroid) was likely used as a reference, this is extremely common in painting since the days of camera obscura. (Image projected onto a canvas and outlined.)

I'm very doubtful that a polaroid was enlarged, printed onto a large 6'x8' canvas, only to be painted over.

Also, the on camera flash, the quality of color interpretation, field of view, all suggest polaroid to me.
