My take:
it comes from a desire to mock all of creation; to either completely corrupt and destroy it, or to do so enough and then make your own world as pavement on top of this one; the best argument was the notion of predetermination; that you are a puppet, and compelling the person to break from God and their own nature with God in order to be free; at least thats how it was in my hour of temptation, which I had victory over though the holy spirit.
