On Wednesday evening, Comedy Central’s Trevor Noah launched into a diatribe against the Catholic Church. The diatribe followed the horrifying news that a bevy of Pennsylvania archdiocese had covered up child molestation for decades. Noah explained:
I’m sorry guys, at some point I feel like we need to stop calling it a church and start calling it what it is: a molesting club with an opening prayer. Because that’s what it feels like.
This is absurd. Yes, the Catholic Church has a serious problem with covering for its abusive priests; yes, that is evil. No, the Catholic Church isn’t alone in this. Trevor Noah works in Hollywood, where abuse of children and women is commonplace. Would he call Hollywood a “molesting club without an opening prayer”? Has he ever done so, despite working in that town and knowing the players?
How about the schools? An Associated Press report from May 2017 found 17,000 official reports of sex assaults on students from fall 2011 to spring 2015 alone. According to Hofstra University researcher Charol Shakeshaft, who performed a study for the Department of Education in 2002, “The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.” That federal report found that 422,000 California public-school students would be victimized by sexual abuse before graduation — more than the entire California Catholic school enrollment, a columnist for CBS News reported. One survey from the American Association of University Women found that one in ten students from 8th to 11th grades said they had been subjected to sexual comments, pornography, peeping, or sexual contact from a teacher or school employee. That would mean that 4.5 million students from K-12 have “suffered sexual abuse by an educator.”
The scandal inside the Catholic Church is absolutely shocking — and the public consequences should be dire. But for Noah to label the Catholic Church in a way he would no other institution betrays hatred for the underlying institution itself, not merely hatred for sexual abuse.

An Islamic State hacking collective is claiming that they "will kill" Anonymous hackers who have been waging a lengthy campaign that has knocked down scores of terrorist websites and social media accounts.
The United Cyber Caliphate is also warning that it will attack the Indonesian government this Friday, showing screenshots of hacked Facebook accounts bearing their branding.
Over the summer, the UCC has claimed takedowns of websites across the world, including 200 Jewish websites in June, and earlier this month threatened Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg by photoshopping his head onto an orange jumpsuit next to an ISIS flag.
Lately, they've left an image of Jihadi John standing next to a kneeling, orange-jumpsuited prisoner with the trademark Guy Fawkes mask of Anonymous photoshopped on the captive's face.
"A message to all Anonymous organization: You are the ones who started the war against us. So expect what will harm you. You are the enemies of Allah. And die in your rage, you and who provoked you against us," the text above the image says, claiming to the hacktivist collective that "you know very well that your strongest branch has joined us."
"We are Islamic State hacking division. We will find you. And we will kill you," the message adds, tacking on a series of hashtags including #OpTheWorld – a play on Anonymous' #OpISIS campaign, and shorthand for #OpTerrorizingTheWorld.

Queen Elizabeth II's personal Dr. Peter Fisher killed in cycle crash
One of Queen Elizabeth II's personal physicians was killed on Wednesday by a truck as he rode his bike to work. Dr. Peter Fisher, 67, an international leader in homeopathic and holistic medicine who had served on the British monarch's medical team for 15 years, was pronounced dead soon after the accident in the central London neighbourhood of Holborn.
Fisher was the director of research at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM), which remembered him on Thursday as "a highly regarded colleague and friend of many at the RLHIM, where he worked for more than 35 years."
The hospital said he "was committed to holistic and compassionate care for his patients."
Fisher was the eighth cyclist to die in London traffic this year. He was killed in a collision involving a truck on national Cycle to Work Day in Britain. According to the BBC the crash was still being investigated, and the truck driver had not been taken into police custody as of Thursday morning.
CBS News partner network BBC News said the queen had been informed of Fisher's death, but there was no immediate reaction from the royal family.

Google Staff Tell Bosses China Censorship is “Moral and Ethical” Crisis
Google employees are demanding answers from the company’s leadership amid growing internal protests over plans to launch a censored search engine in China.
Staff inside the internet giant’s offices have agreed that the censorship project raises “urgent moral and ethical issues” and have circulated a letter saying so, calling on bosses to disclose more about the company’s work in China, which they say is shrouded in too much secrecy, according to three sources with knowledge of the matter.
The internal furor began after The Intercept earlier this month revealed details about the censored search engine, which would remove content that China’s authoritarian government views as sensitive, such as information about political dissidents, free speech, democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest. It would “blacklist sensitive queries” so that “no results will be shown” at all when people enter certain words or phrases, leaked Google documents disclosed. The search platform is to be launched via an Android app, pending approval from Chinese officials.
The censorship plan – code-named Dragonfly – was not widely known within Google. Prior to its public exposure, only a few hundred of Google’s 88,000 employees had been briefed about the project – around 0.35 percent of the total workforce. When the news spread through the company’s offices across the world, many employees expressed anger and confusion.
Now, a letter has been circulated among staff calling for Google’s leadership to recognize that there is a “code yellow” situation – a kind of internal alert that signifies a crisis is unfolding. The letter suggests that the Dragonfly initiative violates an internal Google artificial intelligence ethical code, which says that the company will not build or deploy technologies “whose purpose contravenes widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.”

Trump wants federal suit against opioid manufacturers
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions to file a federal lawsuit against certain companies that supply and manufacture opioids.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting Thursday, Trump said he's directing Sessions to file a separate lawsuit, rather than joining existing lawsuits filed by states affected by the spread of the often-lethal, highly-addictive drugs.
Trump is asking Sessions to look out for opioids coming into the U.S. from China and Mexico, saying those countries are "sending their garbage and killing our people."
Trump added: "It's almost a form of warfare."
It was not immediately clear if or when a federal suit would be filed. A barrage of suits have been filed nationwide against distributors and manufacturers in recent months amid the opioid epidemic.
