Hi Anons, I have a bit of belated research that may be related to the Raleigh Airport event.

The hydraulic fluids on aircraft are usually phosphate esters, the main one being Skydrol which used to be a Monsanto product, but is now supported by Eastman.

A leak of Skydrol into one of the engines and although phosphate esters are self-extinguishing, given enough energy they will burn and release phosgene.

Bypass air from the engines is used to pressurise the cabin, so anything that gets in the bypass air stream gets fed into the cabin.

When I head about this incident my immediate thought was Skydrol. I worked in the oils and lubricants industry for a very long time so I speak from experience.

Phosphate esters are nasty shit. I've known that stuff top drip onto plastic hard hats and dissolve the plastic. They can cause cancer too, so I hope that it's not Skydrol.

As to Ethanol, they really need to change the seals to Viton or similar to make sure that they aren't attacked by it.

I did loads of seal tests for offshore applications in the past. I won't send you to sleep talking about them now. :)

I was told today at work that where I work will be closed down by May 31st next year latest (I suspect it will be some time in the nearer future) and our production will go to Belgium.

This is some 'Glengarry Glen Ross' decision taken by our US parent holding company, I doubt very much that things will change.
