Timelines are timelines, but budget in the news industry refers to what stories will run and get placed where. Big publications have one or two or three "budget" meetings a day and the arguments can get heated. Let's say I'm a local editor covering a series on the city planning board and a proposed housing project. It's been running front page. Then BOOM comes along on a national or international scale and BAM there's no "budget" space for my piece, not even tucked in local section because feature stories about crackheads or whatever…
