COLUMBIA COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CHAIRMAN JOINS GOP

Times Union, The (Albany, NY) - June 5, 1997

Author/Byline: JOHN CAHER

ALBANY – The Republican State Committee pulled a political tit-for-tat Wednesday with the announcement that Columbia County Democratic Chairman Marty Torrey has resigned his position and joined the GOP.

Last month, it had been the Democrats' turn, when Assemblywoman Debra J. Mazzarelli of Long Island abandoned the Republican Party.

At a new conference at state Republican headquarters Wednesday, Torrey said he has come to realize that the principles he believes in are better served by the GOP.

At one time the Democratic Party was an important part of my life,'' Torrey said.It was a party I once believed fought for the middle class, but I've learned that the party which stands for the things that I most believe in is the Republican Party. It is not easy to come to such a conclusion, but it is factual.''

The retired Navy commander also said he applied for an executive position with the Democratic State Committee, but was told by Chairwoman Judith Hope that the party had no place for a career military man.

Peter Ragone, Democratic spokesman, said Hope never made any such remark or suggestion. Hope did say, however, that Torrey came to her looking for a job. He didn't get one.

Torrey said Hope and the party are ``intolerant of other views and other backgrounds.''

Hope said: ``We have spent the past two years rebuilding and revitalizing the New York State Democratic Party – with the help of Democrats from urban, suburban and rural areas – and we have been very successful. We are proud of our achievements.''

Torrey was welcomed into the party by Gov. George Pataki, GOP Chairman William D. Powers and Columbia County GOP Chairman Marty Tuczinski.
