Authorities are investigating reports of a chemical odor in two cities in Orange County.

The Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa Fire Departments received reports Thursday night of a strong odor traveling through the city.

Both departments stated via a press release that several cities are experiencing these conditions. Fire crews began an investigation but a source has yet to be determined.

Authorities recommend closing all windows and doors and urge the public to call 911 in case someone begins showing abnormal symptoms.

Regarding the chemical smell, you can call the South Coast Air Quality Management District at 1-800-288-7664.

Advisory from OCMVCD

It was reported this morning on many media outlets that there is a strong odor in the air in portions of Orange County. A live media broadcast as well as local departments opined that it was “perhaps Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control spraying for West Nile virus.”

The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District has not conducted an aerial spraying and this year’s data does not support such drastic measures. The District’s campaign against mosquitoes involve the use of public health pesticides that are registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and is conducted to prevent human illness or to suppress a heavy nuisance infestation of mosquitoes. The product used last night in Bartlett Park in Huntington Beach is AquaDuet™, which is water-based and odorless. The product was applied from a backpack and was targeted to vegetation where mosquitoest rest; the swath width was limited to 50 feet.
