They need Manafort to be convicted. Not because they need it to lend credence to their muh-Russia story; but because if he walks it will send a message that civilian courts are ill-suited to such high profile politically charged cases. The last thing they want is for everyone to be reminded of how Manafort got away with it when Q/Trump start talking about military tribunals.
