Foster Care and Red Shoe Parties

CASA RED SHOE PARTY

February 23, 2018

On April 28 from 6-9 pm at the Loft Green Room, Chattahoochee CASA is proud to present “The Red Shoe Party,” a fundraising event themed around Dorothy’s ruby red slippers in the Wizard of Oz with the slogan, “There’s No Place like Home.” For the children in foster care in our community, this could not be more true. As they are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, it is CASA’s mission to help them reach permanency in a safe, stable home as quickly as possible. This event is designed to be a party with a purpose helping to raise money and awareness for Chattahoochee CASA so that our community volunteers have the training and support to continue advocating for our most vulnerable citizens. Dust off your red shoes and join the party!

oops forgot the quote (newyorker.com)

"Walton has a similarly educative spirit. For some years, she has given money so that children from the county in Texas where she lives can visit the Amon Carter Museum, in Fort Worth. The thank-you letters she has received from the children, Walton said, have reinforced her commitment to the creation of Crystal Bridges: “They say, ‘We didn’t know we could go to a museum,’ ‘We thought that was for rich people,’ ‘We didn’t know they would let us in.’ ” In its mission, Crystal Bridges has something in common with the great institutions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which sought to infuse a populace with high-cultural literacy.

Unlike Mr. Verver’s museum, Walton’s is set amid rocks rather than atop one. “You think about urban museums, and the traditional neoclassical façade and the ascent of the grand staircase into the temple of culture, and this is quite different,” Bacigalupi told me last winter, as he conducted me through the then skeletal structures of Safdie’s curving galleries. “The museum is to be discovered in the center of this one-hundred-and-twenty-acre wilderness, and, instead of ascending, you really descend into the museum. The tree line surmounts everything we have built, and that is a metaphor for the intersection between art and nature. It is also a kind of technique for viewing art—the idea that being in nature opens you up for the experience of engaging with a work of art.”

And he had that pubic swimming pool in Wilmington named after him, where he worked as a lifeguard in his youth- blessing the poor black folk with his greatness.

Biden said his dozen black fellow lifeguards "treated me as an equal," and they taught each other about race and privilege.

"They'd ask me questions — because I really was the only white guy they really knew — about things that just startled me," Biden said. "I remember one lifeguard asked if I had a five-gallon can for gasoline. I said 'No I don't. But what do you need it for?' He said, 'I'm going down to see my grandmom in North Carolina. We can't stop at most gas stations. They won't let us stop at most gas stations.' I learned a lot."
