Musk Admits He Saw Azealia Banks, Unclear If He Was Tweeting On Acid

With Tesla stock crashing on Friday, suffering its worst weekly loss since 2016 as a result of the "tearful", hour-long phone interview Elon Musk gave to the New York Times, in which the full state of his mental and emotional instability were finally revealed, many Tesla investors were unaware of a bizarre subplot which played out on social media in the past week. It featured the rapper Azealia Banks and Elon Musk, who allegedly was tweeting while tripping on acid.

Several days after Musk shocked markets with his Aug. 7 tweet proposal to take Tesla into a private company "funding secured", Banks took to Instagram and her 600,000 to say that she had stayed at Musk’s house, an experience she compared to "a real-life episode” of the movie "Get Out." She then made an explosive allegation:

"I waited around all weekend while grimes coddled her boyfriend for being too stupid to know not to go on twitter while on acid," Banks wrote, referring to Mr. Musk’s girlfriend, the musician known as Grimes a Canadian electronic-music singer and producer whose real name is Claire Boucher.

Cont. from images:

Her posts quickly went viral and her account of a brief interlude at the intersection of celebrity and technology was covered everywhere from Vogue to CNBC.

In the NYT interview, Musk who "alternated between laughter and tears", denied he was "on weed" or "stoned" when he sent the tweet claiming to be taking Tesla private for a $420 share, although he acknowledged the value could be taken as a reference to marijuana. He said: "It seemed like better karma at $420 than at $419. But I was not on weed, to be clear."

“But I was not on weed, to be clear. Weed is not helpful for productivity. There’s a reason for the word ‘stoned.’ You just sit there like a stone on weed."

Musk did repeat he only used ambien: "It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien," he told the newspaper. However, rather than put him to sleep, the drug has sometimes led Musk to spend his nights on Twitter, worrying some board members, the NYT said.

That said, the board would probably be far more concerned if Musk was tweeting while tripping on acid as Banks alleged, however the topic mercifully did not come up in the NYT interview.

Texas - Doctor Convicted of Raping Sedated Patient Only Gets Probation

A doctor who was convicted for raping his female patient while he worked at Ben Taub Hospital was surprisingly sentenced to only 10 years probation.

The Harris County District Attorney’s office said the jury sentenced Shafeeq Sheikh to probation. Jurors returned a guilty verdict on Thursday for the doctor’s sexual assault trial.

The assault occurred in November 2013, and it took almost a two-year investigation into the case before Sheikh was arrested in October 2015.

Court documents describe how the horrific sexual assault happened after the victim was admitted to the hospital for asthma attacks. The records say during overnight hours, a person entered her room on three different instances and deplorably sexually assaulted her. Investigation revealed that the patient was heavily sedated on those occasions.

The victim also tried to seek the help of the police but was unsuccessful. It turned out the call button has been unplugged.

Sheikh, who’s originally from India, was discovered as the culprit with the help of surveillance cameras inside the hospital that showed Sheikh near the victim’s room. The doctor used his hospital identification card to gain access.

Only after a DNA test has been completed and nearly two years of collecting evidence did detectives finally arrest Sheikh.

The doctor was terminated from Ben Taub in 2014. Sheikh’s Texas medical license was also later suspended.

The horrific 46-year-old doctor even claimed in his defense that the sex acts were “consensual” and that the patient “seduced” him. His lawyers even argued that while the sex acts violated medical ethics, they were “not illegal.”

Sheikh even testified that the patient “came on to him” during a chest exam and that he merely “reciprocated.”

Reactions on social media express dismay and disapproval over the light penalty meted on the doctor considering the severity of his crime and the tarnishing of his profession. There are also those who question why is there a recent trend showing convicted rapists not getting jail time.

Google CEO Downplays Possible Launch Of Censored Search Engine For China

At the beginning of August, leaked documents obtained by The Intercept revealed that Google wanted to re-enter the sizable China market with a censored version of its namesake search engine. Controversy followed, given the kinds of things Google would have to block on behalf of the Chinese government.

However, the tech giant’s CEO told staffers at an all-hands meeting that a new version of its search engine for China was a long way off, if it even happens at all, according to transcripts seen by Bloomberg. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, such an idea is only “exploratory” at the moment.

Pichai specifically said Google was “not close” to bringing search back to China, and it was “very unclear” whether or not the company would be allowed or would want to do it. A piece that ran in a state-owned newspaper in China earlier this month implied the company would be allowed to return on the condition that it follow regulations.

The devastating effects of sugar: Our brain’s rewards center begins to want only foods that are high in fats and carbs

Researchers unveil another alarming negative effect of eating too many foods high in fats and carbohydrates. In a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, it was revealed that the reward center of the brain started to value and want more foods that contain high amounts of fat and carbohydrates, such as processed foods, than foods containing fat or carbs alone. This study supports the idea that such foods take over the body’s innate signals in regulating food consumption.

A team of researchers from Germany, Switzerland, and Canada observed that foods that contain both fats and carbohydrates appear to signal their potential caloric loads to the brain through distinct mechanisms. The study participants accurately estimated calories from fat but were very poor at estimating calories from carbohydrates.

Dana Small, the senior author of the study and director of Yale University‘s Modern Diet and Physiology Research Center, explained that the biological process that is responsible for associating foods with their nutritional value evolved to cautiously determine the value of a food for organisms to make adaptive decisions.

“For example, a mouse should not risk running into the open and exposing itself to a predator if a food provides little energy,” said Small.

In order to determine the brain-body mechanisms behind the genetic predisposition for obesity, eating in the absence of hunger, and difficulty losing or warding off excess weight, the research team investigated how the brain responds to food cues.

In the study, the research team recruited 206 adult participants who underwent brain scans while being shown images of familiar snacks that mostly contain fat, sugar, and a combination of fat and carbohydrates. After that, the participants were given a limited amount of money to bid on their first-choice foods.

White House Counsel "Cooperating Extensively" With Obstruction Probe, Spent 30 Hours With Mueller

White House counsel Donald McGahn II, has been quietly cooperating extensively with special counsel Robert Mueller in his probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to an explosive New York Times report published Saturday afternoon.

Sources told the Times that McGahn has had at least three voluntary interviews with Mueller's team totaling 30 hours, in which he discussed accounts of multiple episodes at the center of Mueller's probe into whether President Trump obstructed justice, as well as the president’s furor toward the Russia investigation and the ways in which he urged McGahn to respond to it.

For a lawyer to share so much with investigators scrutinizing his client is unusual. Lawyers are rarely so open with investigators, not only because they are advocating on behalf of their clients but also because their conversations with clients are potentially shielded by attorney-client privilege, and in the case of presidents, executive privilege.

Among the episodes McGahn discussed with investigators is Trump’s firing last year of former FBI Director James Comey and the president's repeated urging of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to claim oversight of the special counsel despite his recusal from Russia probes. McGahn was also centrally involved in Trump’s attempts to fire the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, which investigators might not have discovered without him.

Commenting on the report, Solomon L. Wisenberg, a deputy independent counsel in the Whitewater investigation "which did not have the same level of cooperation from President Bill Clinton’s lawyers", said that "a prosecutor would kill for that. Oh my God, it would have been phenomenally helpful to us. It would have been like having the keys to the kingdom.”

McGahn began cooperating with Mueller's team last year after Trump’s first round of personal lawyers decided to give investigators as much information as possible, believing the president had nothing to hide.

Trump assembled a personal legal team to defend him. He wanted to take on Mr. Mueller directly, attacking his credibility and impeding investigators. But two of his newly hired lawyers, John M. Dowd and Ty Cobb, have said they took Mr. Trump at his word that he did nothing wrong and sold him on an open-book strategy. As long as Mr. Trump and the White House cooperated with Mr. Mueller, they told him, they could bring an end to the investigation within months.

Mr. McGahn, who had objected to Mr. Cobb’s hiring, was dubious, according to people he spoke to around that time. As White House counsel, not a personal lawyer, he viewed his role as protector of the presidency, not of Mr. Trump. Allowing a special counsel to root around the West Wing could set a precedent harmful to future administrations.

Dem candidates embrace gun control in campaign for House takeover

As the Democrats shift to the left on a number of issues from health care to immigration, they’ve already gone all in on one of the most contentious issues around – gun control

A study by The Wall Street Journal found that of the 63 candidates on the House Democrats’ campaign arm’s list of seats to flip in November, 62 support expanded background checks for gun purchases.

While Dems have long pushed for gun control, there was a time when some candidates ignored the issue, included gun rights as part of their platform or even allied with the National Rifle Association. But support for gun control among candidates has hardened in recent years after a rash of high-profile mass shootings including at schools – most recently in Parkland, Florida in February and Santa Fe, Texas in May.

That shift is being reflected in activity on the campaign trail, with more Democrats being more vocal on gun control and their advocacy of proposals such as background checks.

There has been a spike in spending on ads by Democrats that focus on gun control across gubernatorial, Senate and House races, according to USA Today. In 2014, there were 558 pro-gun control spots, mostly from Democrats. In 2018, that number had rocketed to 18,416, in comparison to 8,897 anti-gun control spots by mostly Republicans.

In the House races, pro-gun control ads represented about 67 percent of those with explicit messages on guns, compared to just six percent in 2014.

That has in turn led to some significant about-faces on the issue from long-time lawmakers. The Journal points to Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz. In a 2010 ad, she bragged about her “A” rating from the NRA, but last month she said she would ban “assault weapons” and was given an “F’ by the pro-gun rights group. She said her position changed after the shooting of former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in 2011.

But while the move may rally the Democratic Party base, it may also give the Republican base a boost – which has repeatedly shown itself more motivated on Second Amendment issues.

The National Republican Congressional Committee suggested that the move was the latest example of the Democratic Party catering to its left-wing base rather than everyday Americans.

“Republican members and candidates are focused on the issues that are important to their respective districts and Democrats are more concerned about appealing to the most radical elements of their party,” an NRCC spokesperson told Fox News.

Gun control is always risky politically for Democrats, who are wary of the political lesson learned from the 90s.

In September 1994 the Democratic-controlled Congress passed an assault weapons ban, which was subsequently signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

Less than two months later the Republicans led by Rep. Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., took control of both the House and the Senate in what was dubbed the “Revolution of 94.”

But Democrats say that their shift represents the changing mood of the nation after a spate of devastating shootings in recent years.

“2018 could be the first year in which intensity on our side of the issue exceeds intensity on the other side,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told The Journal.

Democrats are likely to be buoyed by the victory of Rep. Conor Lamb, D-Pa., in a March special election – who won campaigning for background checks in a district Trump won in 2016.

Additionally a WSJ/NBC poll found that Democratic voters rated gun control the second-most important issues after healthcare. For Republicans, guns were fifth. In midterms, where the party which motivates its base can decide who takes control of the chambers in Congress, tapping into those issues could be key.

But it also represents a broader trend in the party of allowing less diversity on certain litmus issues. Last year DNC Chair Tom Perez said that being pro-choice on the subject of abortion was “non-negotiable.”

Genoa Bridge Tragedy: Morandi CEO Apologizes After Viaduct Collapse

ROME (Sputnik) - CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, which manages and maintains most of Italy's toll roads, including the collapsed Morandi bridge in the city of Genoa, apologized on Saturday for the tragedy for the first time since it has happened.

A large section of Ponte Morandi collapsed on Tuesday, with at least 30 cars plunging hundreds of feet to the ground. According to the latest data, 43 people were killed in the incident. On Wednesday, Italian Minister of Economic Development, Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio, placed all the responsibility for the bridge collapse on Autostrade per l'Italia. On Friday, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Danilo Toninelli said that his ministry had officially initiated the procedure for the cancellation of the state's concession agreement with Autostrade per l'Italia.

"I apologize profoundly. I express my grief and closeness to the relatives of the victims, their friends, the Genoese, this is the pain that I carry in my heart," Giovanni Castellucci said during a special press conference in Genoa, which was broadcast live by Italian news channels.

Castellucci assured that Autostrade per l'Italia intended to alleviate the suffering of people whose relatives died as a result of the collapse of the bridge. He announced that the company was creating a special fund worth "millions of euros" for the tragedy's victims.

He added that the company was ready to begin work on restoring the collapsed bridge.

"It is our primary responsibility to restore this bridge and to resume traffic on it, and we have a project that will allow us to do this within eight months, including the dismantling and restoration process to get a new steel bridge," Castellucci said.

He reiterated that the company had no information that the collapsed bridge had been in a critical condition."All the reports that I was acknowledged with said that its condition was good," he said.

The top manager added that this issue would be the subject of analysis and expertise, which will be held at the request of the prosecutor's office.

This is the first public appearance of Autostrade per l'Italia leadership after the tragedy in Genoa. Until now, Castellucci has been limited to brief statements that "all the work and condition of the viaduct were under constant surveillance and control," and that "there was no evidence that the bridge was posing threat."

Italy declared a national mourning on Saturday. More than 600 people lost their homes located near the bridge, because they were forced to leave them. Earlier in the day, the state funeral of 18 people, including a nine-year-old boy, who died as a result of the motorway collapse, was held at one of the premises of the city's fair grounds. Nine people injured in the incident remain in hospitals, eight of them in serious condition.
