Trump stays out of Arizona's ugly and costly GOP fight

President Trump's decision to remain on the sidelines has caused a protracted and costly Republican primary fight in Arizona, where the three candidates are heavily playing up their Trump bona fides despite no endorsement in sight.

All three candidates – establishment favorite Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), her main GOP rival Kelli Ward, and outside shot former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio – have personal connections to Trump, a reason political observers believe have led him to sit this primary out.

But the absence of a decisive endorsement has each candidate and their financial backers believing they can still win the Aug. 28 primary, leading to more than $7 million being spent in the race by outside groups alone.

Those kind of numbers and the intensity of the fight are worrying some Republicans as McSally, the candidate who is leading in the polls and the one believed to have the most general election appeal, is too mired in a primary fight to be focused on likely Democratic opponent, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.).

The race for the seat being vacated by departing Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) is critical for Republican hopes to retain its narrow 1-seat majority in the Senate. It is currently seen as a "toss-up" by The Cook Political Report, in a state where Democrats haven’t won a Senate race since 1988, and that Trump won by less than 4 points in 2016.

Thousands of UK bridges are 'sub-standard', at risk of collapse and will cost almost £1billion to repair, experts warn after the tragedy in Genoa

The number of 'sub-standard' bridges in the UK has soared in recent years and would cost almost £1 billion to repair, according to alarming new findings.

A survey by the RAC Foundation revealed that almost 3,500 British bridges maintained by councils are not considered strong enough to bear 44-ton lorries – the heaviest vehicles permitted on our roads – placing them at risk of collapse if warning signs are ignored.

The figure – an increase of almost 45 per cent from the 2,375 recorded in 2015 – was correlated after the motoring research charity sent out Freedom of Information requests to all local authorities.

Experts at the RAC Foundation believe that reduced maintenance due to budget constraints is partly to blame for the substantial increase, while calculating that the one-off cost of bringing all 'substandard' bridges up to scratch would be around £934 million, or £271,000 per structure.

The current total of 3,441 bridges regarded as 'sub-standard' – using the widely used 44-ton measure – represents 4.6 per cent of the 74,000 bridges on the UK's local road network, or around one in 22 of the total.
