Given the state of the documentation from that period, how could you possibly have any certainty about that.

The "historical" St. Nicholas is a shady figure at best and there is very little explanation for his widespread following.

The Nicolaitans connection is interesting if nothing else and worth looking into.

Most of St. Nicholas's story is mythology and legend. Firm historical evidence is sparse at best.

Legend isn't necessarily untrue, but it is not reliably true.

Looking for evidence at the heart of legends is what researchers do.

Deal with it.
