I haven't seen the adrenochrome sustaining life assertion, from what I know I agree with you that it seems incorrect. I do remember a very early push of "schizophrenia is not what you think it is" and "cultists eat the pineal glands of sacrifice victims for the adrenochrome" as well as "animals are tortured to make them taste better", all of which appear to me to at least be plausible.
If they are playing us then they are containing us as well. Prisons tend to be schools for criminals. I can't imagine a plan that would backfire more.
