Company Embeds Microchips In Employees

"You get used to it; it’s easy"

If your employer offered to embed a microchip in your hand that would make it easier to log into your computer and buy sodas from the vending machine, would you do it, knowing full well that your privacy could be compromised?

At Three Square Market, a technology company, as many as 80 employees have a microchip embedded in the skin between their thumb and index finger allowing them to access doors, computers, and a host of other machines by waving their hands.

"When Patrick McMullan wants a Diet Dr Pepper while he’s at work, he pays for it with a wave of his hand," writes Technology Review in describing the product. "McMullan has a microchip implanted between his thumb and forefinger, and the vending machine immediately deducts money from his account."

No larger than a grain of rice, the chip enables employees to bypass menial tasks like typing a password to log into a computer and inserting money into a vending machine. The idea originated in Sweden, where citizens have begun to embed chips in themselves for similar purposes. Some people would call this laziness; Patrick McMullan, president of Three Square Market, says it's convenience.

"You get used to it; it’s easy," McMullan says.

Some employees described using the chip 10 to 15 times a day. Others are so used to the product that they notice a stark difference when the chip reader has technical difficulties.

Obviously, the big elephant in the room here is one of privacy. The possibility of a company monitoring their employees through company-issued smart phones is one thing, but an embedded microchip could give companies the ability to monitor their employees wherever they go, at anytime.

Nick Anderson, an associate professor in public health sciences at the University of California, Davis, agrees this could be a problem, as could the possibility of strangers with chip readers gaining access to your personal information.

Andrew Cuomo Doubles Down, Calls President Trump 'Un-American'

Gov. Andrew Cuomo isn't letting a week's worth of blow-back deter him from doubling down on his comments that "America was never great." During a speech to worshippers at the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, Cuomo called President Donald Trump "un-American" and accused his supporters of racism and sexism.

The New York Post reports that Cuomo launched into a tirade during a religious-themed campaign stop referring to Trump as “King Trump,” "the “great divider-in -chief of this nation,” and accusing the President of enabling a culture of “sexism, racism, bigotry and intolerance.”

Pope Issues Letter To Catholics On Sex Abuse Crisis: 'We Showed No Care For The Little Ones'

"We abandoned them."

In a letter to all Catholics following the sex abuse scandal out of Pennsylvania, Pope Francis asks his "suffering" flock to come together in a spirit determined to bring about necessary reform.

Published Monday, the Holy Father's lengthy letter recalls the words of Saint Paul in 1 Cor 12:26 when he declared, "If one member suffers, all suffer together with it." With that, Pope Francis reminds the faithful that as one body in Christ, the suffering inflicted on so much as one member inflicts suffering on everyone else.

The Pope goes on to say that simple admission of sorrow and reparations for abuse victims will not fully heal the damage done. For any meaningful change to happen, Pope Francis says that "no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated."

"We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them," the Pope admits.

On Friday, Michelle Goldberg of The New York Times appeared on MSNBC, and made a rather shocking claim.

During a panel discussion regarding President Trump, the following conversation took place among Caitlin Huey-Burns of RealClearPolitics, John Podhoretz of Commentary, host Katy Tur, and Goldberg:

HUEY-BURNS: Again, this is the most vocal president, at least in real time, that we’ve had in recent memory, right? He’s the leader of the free world –

GOLDBERG: Oh, no he’s not. He’s not the leader of the free world – but sorry.

PODHORETZ: By default, he’s the leader of the free world.

GOLDBERG: Angela Merkel is the leader of the free world, but –

HUEY-BURNS: Well, he is the most important person in the world in politics right now, and he is very vocal, and I do agree with you that this does express a level of exasperation among his aides that they can’t have any control over –

TUR: Your argument that he’s not the leader of the free world – because he’s not standing up for democracy, because he’s not standing up for humanitarian rights?

GOLDBERG: Right, because he’s a sort of junior player in a bloc of authoritarian countries.

TUR: And people like the European Union are no longer looking at him as a leader any longer, and [they’re] thinking of doing their own thing.

GOLDBERG: Of course not, they see him as … he’s part of a bloc that includes Vladimir Putin, Duterte. He’s kind of part of a kind of [unintelligible].

TUR: Well, hold on –

PODHORETZ: It’s worse than that in a certain way. I mean, not that that’s not the worst thing you could have said [because] that’s about the worst you could say about him.

TUR: Well he’s not rounding people up and murdering them without any, you know, due process.

GOLDBERG: He’d certainly like to.

TUR: I don’t think you can say that definitively.
