In 1944 Mrs. Valentine, promotion director for Mademoiselle magazine, was asked by Walter Annenberg, the publisher, to revive a fading movie magazine. Mrs. Valentine instead proposed a magazine for teen-age girls, which became Seventeen, now one of the major Annenberg publications.

'It was time to treat children as adults,'' she said in an interview

years later. She credited Seventeen with creating a teen market for clothing manufacturers and other industries. Within a year, Seventeen had a circulation of a million.
