USGS Heliplots

When asked about why they were all blacked out yesterday, they responded:

 

I’m not absolutely sure, but I think the heliplots looked like that because there were so many large earthquakes and aftershocks in different parts of the world over the last few days. In any case, you can see the end of the activity at the top of the plots today, and things are much more quiet for now.

 

Answer doesn't quite add up for me. The sensors shown are from all over the world, but I don't recall hearing about any other major earthquakes except Fiji. Maybe someone more knowledgeable about seismology is lurking…
