Russian military braces for massive war games in the east

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's military forces in the country's east were put on high alert Monday ahead of massive war games that also involve China and Mongolia, the largest show of power in nearly 40 years, the Russian defense minister said.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the five days of military drills will pave the way for the Vostok (East) 2018 military exercise. Shoigu said those maneuvers, set for next month, will be the largest since the massive Soviet war games in 1981.

The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said President Vladimir Putin could attend the exercise.

Speaking to the top Russian military brass, Shoigu said army, air force and navy units will take part in the exercise that will be held across the Far East and Siberia. He added that military units from China and Mongolia will also take part.

Trump's EPA to release plan Tuesday gutting Obama's climate rule targeting coal plants

The Trump administration on Tuesday plans to unveil a proposal to replace the Clean Power Plan, former President Barack Obama’s signature initiative to combat climate change, with a narrower rule more friendly to industry.

The Environmental Protection Agency will introduce its proposal in the morning, renamed the “Affordable Clean Energy Rule,” and President Trump is expected to tout it at a rally in coal-friendly West Virginia later that night.

GOP has ‘record-shattering’ 30 million voter contacts, 20,000-member outreach team

The Republican National Committee’s program to out-do former President Obama’s grassroots organizing has gone into warp speed and already made a record-breaking 30 million voter contacts in its goal of keeping the House and Senate in GOP hands.

RNC officials said that 30 million voter contacts is a month ahead of schedule and better off than it was in 2016 when it out-hustled the Democrats to help Donald Trump win the presidency over presumed winner Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The unusually aggressive ground campaign was designed to build a Republican grassroots effort. The RNC turned to its Republican Leadership Initiative Fellowship and it has locked in 20,000 fellows, four times its voter outreach force of just two years ago.
