I remember how bent out of shape I was when I figured out some fifteen years ago that they're planning to kill us all, so I can see the contagion of terror as that ripples through the crowd.
I also think there's an alien component, as in we're cattle, which could take people over the edge if we've got giant termites in the woodwork underground that need exterminating.
