Tom Steyer Renews Call for Impeachment After Manafort Verdict, Cohen Plea

Billionaire left-wing investor Tom Steyer renewed his call for the impeachment of President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening, following the conviction of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen earlier.

In a video released to social media, Steyer said:

Today, in a federal courtroom, Donald Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was found guilty on eight felony counts. In another federal courtroom, his longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, pled [sic] guilty to another eight felony counts. This continues a long history of Mr. Trump’s associates routinely and intentionally breaking the law. One of the counts for Mr. Cohen included conspiring to break federal election laws [sic] with Donald Trump. Mr. Trump has, in addition, committed at least nine impeachable offenses [sic]. The evidence continues to mount up. The question is when will Congress will pay attention.

Blumenthal: ‘We’re in a Watergate Moment’ — Republicans Will Join Effort to Save Our Democracy

Tuesday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) reacted to President Donald Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen pleading guilty to campaign contribution violations and fraud, and Trump’s one-time campaign chairman Paul Manafort being found guilty of felony tax fraud.

Blumenthal said, “Today is going to be historic. We’ll all remember what we were doing when we heard this news about Michael Cohen implicating the president in a very, very serious crime. If Donald Trump were anyone except the president of the United States, very probably he would be charged today with a crime. And the White House is looking increasingly like a criminal enterprise.”

He continued, “We’re in a Watergate moment, where the two parties have to come together. We need bipartisanship now more than ever to protect the special counsel and to stop, and I must underscore, stop consideration of pardons.”

Germany Calls For Global Payment System Independent Of The US

In a stunning vote of "no confidence" in the US monopoly over global payment infrastructure, Germany’s foreign minister Heiko Maas called for the creation of a new payments system independent of the US that would allow Brussels to be independent in its financial operations from Washington and as a means of rescuing the nuclear deal between Iran and the west.

Writing in the German daily Handelsblatt, Maas said "Europe should not allow the US to act over our heads and at our expense. For that reason it’s essential that we strengthen European autonomy by establishing payment channels that are independent of the US, creating a European Monetary Fund and building up an independent Swift system," he wrote, cited by the FT.

Maas said it was vital for Europe to stick with the Iran deal. "Every day the agreement continues to exist is better than the highly explosive crisis that otherwise threatens the Middle East," he said, with the unspoken message was even clearer: Europe no longer wants to be a vassal state to US monopoly over global payments, and will now aggressively pursue its own "Swift" network that is not subservient to Washington's every whim.

US Inmates Strike to End ‘Prison Industrial Slave Complex’

Prisoners in 17 US states are striking on Tuesday, August 21, on the anniversary of the death of Black Panther prison organizer George Jackson. Inmates are engaging in work stoppages and hunger strikes, among other methods, in a bid to push for better conditions, more rights and an end to prison slavery.

The strike will continue until September 9, the anniversary of the 1971 uprising at Attica Correctional Facility in New York.

A prisoner who helped organize the strike told Sputnik News in April that they're looking to dismantle the "prison industrial slave complex." He is incarcerated at Lee Correctional Facility in South Carolina, which saw the deadliest event in US prison history in the past 25 years on April 15. Seven people were killed and more than 20 were injured during the revolt. The strike is meant to protest that violence, as well as poor living conditions in US prisons and the practice of slave labor there.

The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution abolished slavery — at least that's what most Americans think. In reality, it forbade "slavery [and] involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime."

That means that in effect, slavery is an ongoing phenomenon in America. Prisoners make all kinds of goods, typically for a rate spanning between zero and a few dollars a day. License plates, textiles, Starbucks coffee cups and many consumer products of are made, at a subsidized rate, often for large corporations, by prisoners. California's detained workforce has more than 2,000 inmates battling wildfires, including almost 60 minors. They're making $3 a day as they risk their lives, yet are also forbidden from joining fire departments after their release.

‘The CIA is listening & may kill me’: Duterte mulls ditching his smartphone

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is thinking of dumping his smartphone over fears that the CIA is constantly eavesdropping on his conversations and might use his private information to eventually assassinate him.

“I know, the US is listening. I’m sure it’s the CIA, it’s also the one who will kill me,” Duterte said in Cebu City on Tuesday, rejuvenating fears that Washington may seek his demise over his independent foreign policy and willingness to obtain weapons from other global suppliers.

To avert possible smartphone intrusion by outside powers, which Duterte said could include "Russia, China, Israel, and maybe Indonesia,” the 73-year-old leader is considering going back to using a basic cellphone, with which eavesdropping and interception is harder.

Noting that he is not a tech-savvy leader, he anecdotally recalled how he once sent a confidential message to all of his Viber contacts after accidentally clicking the “send all” feature.

Duterte has long feared that the CIA might be out for vengeance amid deteriorating bilateral ties with Washington. Just last Friday, Duterte once again noted that the CIA “wanted me dead.”

Washington’s refusal to sell assault rifles to Manila, over concerns about the country’s human rights record amid its ongoing war on drugs, has forced Duterte to seek new suppliers. Manila, which has long depended on the US for weapons, turned to China and Russia to fill the gap.

Moscow and Manila signed a military cooperation agreement last year, with Russia already supplying over 5,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles to the Philippines for free, to help it fight Islamist insurgency. Despite pressure from the US, Duterte’s government is also considering the purchase of patrol boats, helicopters, armored vehicles and even submarines from Russia.

On Tuesday, Duterte once again defended his choice to seek new arms suppliers, after US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver asked Manila to think “very carefully” about the consequences of acquiring Russian weapons. “You’re not just buying capability, you’re investing in a relationship,” Schriver noted earlier this month.

2 men sentenced to death for gang-raping & slitting throat of 8yo girl in India

Two men convicted of abducting, sexually assaulting and attempting to kill an eight-year-old girl in Mandsaur district of India have been sentenced to death under the country’s newly toughened anti-rape legislation.

It took less than two months for the Special Investigation Team of the prosecutor to build a case against Irfan Mewati, 20, and Asif Mewati, 24, and to prove without a reasonable doubt that, on June 26, the pair brutally raped and tortured a schoolgirl before attempting to slit her throat.

The 350-page case, based on 92 witness testimonies and over 100 pieces of evidence, including CCTV footage and DNA samples, was enough for Sessions Judge Nisha Gupta in Mandsaur to sentence the duo to death, under the revised Indian Penal Code and under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, which mandates capital punishment for persons committing rape on victims under 12 years of age.Noting that the accused “do not deserve leniency” in this “rarest of the rare case,” Judge Gupta stressed that “death was only way out to punish” Asif and Irfan.

On June 26, the criminal duo lured an eight-year-old student from outside her school where she was waiting for her father. They took her to a secluded spot and gang-raped her. The rapists then slashed her throat and left her to die.

The child was however saved by locals and regained consciousness in hospital some 18 hours after the assault. The girl suffered severe injuries to her neck, face, head and private parts, and is still recovering in hospital.

“The act of the two accused was of a cruel and gruesome nature,” the judge was quoted as saying by assistant district prosecution officer Nitesh Krishnan. “The accused not only raped her, but they attacked and injured her private parts and other delicate body parts with a knife.”

The rape of an eight-year-old from Mandsaur ignited outrage among locals who carried out protests across Madhya Pradesh state of central India, demanding justice. Tuesday’s verdict was the sixth capital sentence handed down in Madhya Pradesh, which was the first state to enact the death penalty for rapists of minor girls below 12 in December.

US to Impose Anti-Dumping Duties on Welded Pipe Imports From China, Turkey

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US customs agents will begin collecting preliminary antidumping duties on welded steel pipe imports from China, Canada, Turkey and three other countries, the Commerce Department said in a press release.

"Today, the US Department of Commerce announced the affirmative preliminary determinations in the antidumping duty (AD) investigations of imports of large diameter welded pipe from Canada, China, Greece, India, [South] Korea, and Turkey," the release said on Tuesday.

The Commerce Department will instruct US border agents to collect cash deposits from importers of the product to offset unfair below market prices. Welded pipe from China may get hit with preliminary fees of more than 130 percent, almost 25 percent for Canadian pipes, and 3 to 5 percent on product from Turkey, the release said.

In 2017, imports of large diameter welded pipe from Canada, China, Greece, India, South Korea and Turkey were valued at an estimated $179.9 million, $29.2 million, $10.7 million, $294.7 million, $150.9 million, and $57.3 million respectively, the Commerce Department said.

Final determinations will be announced on November 6 for China and India and January 3 for Canada, Greece, Korea, and Turkey, the release said. If Commerce makes affirmative final determinations of dumping and the US International Trade Commission (ITC) makes affirmative final injury determinations, Commerce will then issue antidumping duty (AD) orders.
