Democrats Say They Won’t Meet With Trump's Supreme Court Pick Because Of Cohen Allegations. That’s Idiotic.

In the wake of Michael Cohen’s allegations that President Trump directed him to violate federal campaign finance law, Democrats are seizing the opportunity to state that they will not even bother to meet with Trump’s latest Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) explained:

A president, identified as an unindicted co-conspirator of a federal crime – an accusation made not by a political enemy but by the closest of his own confidants – is on the verge of making a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. A court that may someday soon determine the extent of the president’s legal jeopardy. In my view: the Senate Judiciary Committee should immediately pause the consideration of the Kavanaugh nomination.

Parents outraged after district moves teen who allegedly threatened mass murder to nearby school

Outraged parents are moving swiftly to force officials at a California school district to have a boy removed from its schools after he threatened to kill 30 people at a middle school earlier this year, KTVU-TV reported.

Parents at Sequoia Middle School in Pleasant Hill, California, were unaware before school started that a 13-year-old boy arrested for making terroristic threats at another middle school in the district had been transferred to their children’s school this year.

Kim Childers said she learned the information from her son after he came home on the first day of school. He told her he had two classes with the boy. Authorities have withheld the boy’s name because he’s a juvenile.

“This is a huge deal to me,’’ Childers told KTVU. “I kept my son home today [Tuesday] and we are looking into homeschooling and doing independent study for now.”

Childers went into action and created an online petition urging officials to completely remove the student from the Mt. Diablo Unified School District.

The petition started on Monday has gathered more than 800 signatures.

Classes began Aug. 16 at the San Francisco Bay area school. The two middle schools are about three miles apart.

London Police Appeal For Information After Fourth Shooting in Two Days, Illegal Gun Factory Discovered

Two men were arrested Tuesday night after a shooting near Rayners Lane station in London which saw two injured, with Britains’ capital city seeing a total of four shooting incidents in just two days.

The attack took place after 5 pm, with officers and ambulance crews summoned to Rayners Lane station in Harrow. A police statement on the incident reveals a male fired into a group of men by the station, before mounting a moped with another person and fleeing the scene.

Two men aged 18 and 25-years-old were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and were subsequently released pending further investigations.

Neither of the two men taken to hospital were seriously wounded in the attack. Social media posts by witnesses at the scene showed large crowds outside the station in the aftermath of the attack, and the London police helicopter circling the scene.

Charges Against California Congressman Purely Political, Spokesman Says

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) believes the campaign finance charges filed against him on Aug. 21 are “purely politically motivated,” according to his spokesman.

Federal officials indicted Hunter on charges that he and his wife used hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds to pay for vacations, video games, and other personal expenses and filed false campaign finance reports.

Adam Braverman, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California, said Hunter has been accused of conspiracy, wire fraud, falsification of records, and other charges.

Braverman said in a statement that a federal grand jury indicted the lawmaker and his wife on charges that they misused more than $250,000 in campaign funds to pay for family vacations, groceries, video games, meals and other personal expenses.

Hunter’s attorney, Gregory Vega, pointed out in an Aug. 6 letter to U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that the investigation into his client appears to be politically motivated.

Vega said in the letter that Hunter, 41, was an early congressional supporter of Donald Trump for president while two members of the prosecution team had attended a private fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the 2016 presidential race.

Vega charged that the “overt political leanings” of the two prosecutors created an “apparent conflict that cannot be ignored.”

Another early backer of Trump, Republican Representative Chris Collins of New York, ended his bid for re-election earlier this month after he was charged with participating in an insider trading scheme.

Hunter was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan called the charges against Hunter “deeply serious” and said that Hunter would be removed from his committee assignments pending resolution of the charges.

Hunter, a former Marine officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Education and Workforce Committee. He represents a district that covers parts of San Diego County.

Google, Amazon and IBM all trying to acquire your hospital records; issue statement demanding end of patient privacy

Doesn’t it feel like a net is closing in around us from every direction lately? Big Tech companies like Google and YouTube have the independent media in a stranglehold of censorship and control, more and more states are enforcing mandatory vaccines, and now a group consisting of Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and other tech giants has issued a statement pushing for unfettered access to the medical records of every American citizen.

While mainstream media sources like CNBC have expressed approval for this type of access, they also acknowledge that tech companies might not have strictly altruistic reasons for wanting these records to become accessible to all. As CNBC noted, “The lack of open standards around health data is a huge barrier for them to get into the $3 trillion health system.”

Interestingly, these companies are rivals in many ways, so the fact that they would work together on this initiative speaks volumes about how desperately they want to break down the barriers that are keeping them locked out of this lucrative market.

Data sharing restrictions

Both Google and Microsoft have been open about their interest in the storage and sharing of health care information for at least the past decade. Unfortunately for them, however, there are laws in place which protect patient rights to the secrecy of such information. There are very specific rules governing who may access such records, which medical conditions have to be reported by health care practitioners, and the specific circumstances under which a patient may choose to waive their rights to such privacy. These laws differ from state to state, further complicating the issue of medical record sharing. (Related: Your medical records aren’t safe – Ruling allows federal government to seize medical records without a warrant.)

College instructor creates ‘Second Amendment zone’ to segregate gun carriers—it doesn’t go over well

A teaching assistant at the University of Utah is under fire for attempting to create a “Second Amendment zone,” which was intended to segregate gun carriers from the rest of the class population.

It backfired, and the teaching assistant has been reassigned to other duties for the remainder of the semester.

University policy, as well as state law, permits students to carry firearms on campus so long as they are properly and legally licensed to do so.

What are the details?

The unnamed teaching assistant reportedly attempted to create a safe space in the classroom for those who oppose guns by figuratively quarantining those weapon-carrying students in a taped-off area without any desks.

Campus Reform reported that the area was about 3 feet by 3 feet, and did not contain a desk because “desks are reserved for students who respect the personal and psychological safety of their classmates and instructor.”

The university reacted swiftly when the issue was brought to their attention and quashed the notion of a “Second Amendment zone” in the classroom or anywhere on campus.

A Facebook post by Utah state Rep. Karianne Lisonbee revealed the document that the teaching assistant reportedly created.

In an earlier iteration of the post, Lisbonee wrote, “I am livid. A University of Utah Professor doesn’t understand the Bill of Rights and University policy on free speech – which is disturbing enough. But even more egregious, she is seeking to break state law and deprive students of their rights. Please share.”

When the story began to pick up traction, and was addressed by school administration, Lisbonee added, “Update: Great news! I have been assured that this teacher has been reprimanded for publishing a syllabus against University policy. She was asked and has issued an apology to her students. Her syllabus has been retracted by the University and they are committed to making sure that she receives proper training. Thank you to the University and to the brave students who raised this issue. The price of liberty is constant vigilance. Please share!”

The full document read:

Concealed carry is protected under your second amendment rights! However, because the University of Utah reserves the right to restrict elements of the first amendment on campus to specifically sanctioned ‘free speech zones’ I am reserving the right to restrict elements of the second amendment in my own classroom.

If you feel that it is somehow at all appropriate to bring a gun to class (hint: it is not—this is absurd, antisocial, and frightening behavior), you are restricted to spending your time in class in my “second amendment zone” a 3×3 taped square on the floor in the very back of the classroom, that will be shared with all other gun carriers. This zone also does not include a desk, because desks are reserved for students who respect the personal and psychological safety of their classmates and instructor.

What did the college say?

A spokesperson for the school told Campus Reform in a statement that the teaching assistant’s policy has been removed from the syllabus.

“University of Utah officials recently learned that a graduate teaching assistant included a statement in an undergraduate course syllabus that violated both state law and university policy. The statement has been removed from the syllabus and students in the class have been alerted to the error,” the university spokesperson said.

“The graduate student instructor has apologized and has received additional training about the university’s policies,” the statement continued, and added that the teaching assistant “will not teach this semester and will instead have other assignments” instead.

“The approval of course syllabuses is handled by individual departments, and syllabuses are expected to comply with all university policies,” the statement concluded.

Social Media Companies the Most Dangerous Monopolies Ever

Facebook, Twitter, and Google are far worse than the original monopolies like International Harvester and Standard Oil and far more dangerous because they monopolize not just our industries but our brains. They control, or at least inordinately influence, how Americans and even much of the world think.

The news that Facebook has "trust" scores for users but will not reveal them to those same users is, to put it mildly, distressing. One wonders what the trust score of, say, George Orwell might have been. That Animal Farm was inflammatory stuff. And how about Aldous Huxley, the drug abuser who wrote Brave New World?

And what about you and me? How does that make you feel when your random comments and opinions are being cataloged for future use as they would be in a Stalinist police state? It's one thing for the government to do that — and they do — but another for media that are so pervasive their reach dwarfs government.

Oh, but these people are liberals. They are "good."

Facebook Removes 5,000 Advertising Categories Based On Race, Religion

Less than a week after a government agency accused Facebook of allowing discriminatory housing advertising, the social network giant has removed thousands of targeted ad categories. Facebook on Tuesday announced in a company blog post that 5,000 ad categories based on religion and race will no longer be available to advertisers.

In addition, Facebook pledged to “educate advertisers about their obligations” to the company’s non-discrimination policies. Advertisers will need to complete a new certification process to keep their ads up on Facebook.

Facebook will not release the list of deleted terms in order to keep advertisers from gaming the system, CNET reported. However, two examples included “Islamic culture” and “Buddhism” as terms advertisers could use to specifically target their wares on Facebook.

US Diplomats Told to Promote US Weapons Sales

Officials determined to see US remain world's largest arms exporter

Diplomatic priorities for the US can be quite complicated, and sometimes inscrutable. One constant high priority, however, is selling weapons made by America’s major arms-makers to other countries. Though private companies, they increasingly find the US diplomatic corps working as their sales team.

Donald Trump open to lifting Russian sanctions

Comments in interview with Reuters indicate that the doors are not entirely slammed shut between the US and Russia regarding sanctions.

On Wednesday August 22, the latest sanctions set against Russia by the US go into effect. These sanctions have already exacted a toll on the Ruble sending it into the high sixties against the dollar last week. At the time of this writing the ruble has only slightly improved from the worst level since the announcement, and this round of sanctions is the most painful since the Ruble hit a crippling level of 83 to the dollar in late 2015.

Ammar Campa-Najjar, a Working Class Progressive, Gets a Boost From Indictment of Duncan Hunter

Ammar Campa-Najjar, the Democratic candidate for California’s 50th Congressional District, went from obscurity to congressional frontrunner Tuesday night with the indictment of his Republican opponent, Rep. Duncan Hunter.

Hunter and his wife Margaret were indicted for regularly using campaign funds to pay for personal expenses, including numerous luxury vacations, private school tuition for their kids, a garage door for their home, fees to fly the family pet to Washington, D.C., meals at everywhere from Spago to Taco Bell, tequila shots, and dental surgery. The indictment notes some particularly egregious violations, such as purchasing clothing at a golf store so that they “could be falsely reported to the treasurer as ‘balls for the wounded warriors.’”

Hunter, himself an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran, has called the Justice Department charges “politically motivated” and vowed to fight them in court.

He has been under federal investigation for some time, and local Republicans were privately hoping that if he were to be indicted it would come before the primary, so that the party could nominate somebody else in his place. Per California election laws, Hunter’s name cannot be taken off the ballot unless he seeks removal from a state judge, an extraordinary step, and one he does not appear inclined to take. Moreover, even if a candidate is removed, no write-in campaigns are allowed on general election ballots in California as a result of its top-two law. Either Hunter and Campa-Najjar, the top two vote-getters in the June primary, will appear on the November ballot, or only Campa-Najjar will. In all likelihood it will be the former.

California Democratic Party Chairman told Roll Call on Tuesday, “I think the Republicans just lost another House seat … Surely the voters of San Diego are not going to elect a crook who’s been indicted.”

The unfolding drama has echoes of the 2006 midterms, the last time Democrats reclaimed the chamber from Republicans. In that race, two scandal-plagued Republicans, Tom Delay in Texas and Mark Foley in Florida, could not be replaced on the ballot and turned heavily Republican districts into Democratic pickups.

That said, progressives there aren’t celebrating just yet, given the conservative lean of the district, which elected Hunter’s father to the House for some three decades before the younger Hunter replaced him.
