AUSTRALIA UPDATE

TURNBULL LOSES SUPPORT

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said a party meeting will be called tomorrow at noon. If a leadership vote goes ahead he won’t stand as a candidate, triggering a by-election for his seat. Mr Turnbull said it’s important ministers are eligible to sit in the house amid claims Peter Dutton could be ineligible due to his childcare business and related government subsidies. He called the sudden leadership battle a “form of madness” amid positive polls adding the crisis “a very deliberate effort to pull the Liberal Party further to the right”.

Mexico Cardinal: Victims Who Accuse Priests Should Be ‘Ashamed’

Mexican Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera said abuse victims should be “ashamed” to accuse “men of the Church.”

The newly-minted cardinal was speaking to a group of journalists on August 16, just days after the bombshell revelations out of Pennsylvania that some 300 members of the Church abused upwards of 1,000 children over the course of 70 years. This abuse was only possible, according the grand jury report, because of a Church-wide cover up that reached all the way to the Vatican.

“I’m here happy to talk about nice things, not about problematic things, it’s an accusation that is made, and in some cases it’s true,” Obeso River said. “But the evil of many is the consolation of fools, because sometimes those who accuse men of the Church should [be careful] because they have long tails that are easily stepped on.”

The comments could be interpreted as a threat, a threat of exposure if you accuse a priest with skeletons in your own closet.

The cardinal spoke to reporters in Spanish and one interpretation of his remarks reads, “those who accuse us should have a little pain.”

He did add that the allegations “make us feel bad and we want to improve.”

Obeso Rivera was appointed a cardinal by Pope Francis in late June.

The Church’s sex scandal also touched Obeso Rivera’s Mexico.

Father Marcial Maciel Dogollado was defrocked by Pope Benedict in 2006 after being found guilty by the Church of sexually abusing nine boys and young men. After he died, it was discovered he had fathered a child with one of his two mistresses and might have abused his own children. Dogollado died in Florida in 2008 at the age of 87.

Seems Erdogan is getting worried possibly trying to hide behind NATO????

US Policies Violate NATO Principles, Erdogan Spokesman Says

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman on Wednesday criticized Washington for the attempts to intervene into detained pastor Andrew Brunson’s case.

Turkish president's spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin urged the United States to respect Turkey's judicial independence in a written statement to Reuters. The spokesperson noted that the US administration had made arbitrary comments and demands in Brunson’s case.

"There is rule of law in Turkey and the Andrew Brunson case is a legal issue. There is an ongoing legal process related to this individual," Kalin said. He stressed that Ankara finds "unacceptable the disregard of the legal process by the United States, which has been making certain demands."

Erdogan's spokesman also remarked that the US administration most recent policies were at odds with the principles and values of NATO, saying that the recent US National Security Adviser John Bolton's comments meant that the US was targeting a NATO ally in an economic war.

Kalin’s comments came after Bolton told Reuters earlier that Turkey had made a "big mistake" in not releasing Brunson. During his visit to Israel, Bolton claimed that Turkey could end the crisis "instantly" by doing "the right thing as a NATO ally" and freeing American pastor.

The Turkish currency value has been falling recently amid a diplomatic and trade row with Washington. Brunson is currently under house arrest in Turkey on charges of complicity in a failed 2016 coup.
