BELIEVERS or FOLLOWERS will always be used as adjectives when attempting to contain and demean those subscribing to an unproven theory.
It puts them on a footing of "blind followers" or of "crazy believers" associated with cults - making readers feel they own the high, safe ground if they do not subscribe to the associated theory.
