‘Information ops’: Secret meeting of social media & tech giants to tackle midterm elections
Representatives from America’s tech giants are meeting in private to discuss strategies for countering “information operations” ahead of the midterm elections. The meeting comes amid growing concern over social media censorship.
The secret meeting, which will take place on Friday at Twitter’s headquarters in downtown San Francisco, will focus on “information operations, election protection, and the work we are all doing to tackle these challenges,” BuzzFeed News has reported, citing an email written by Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher. A dozen companies, including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, will reportedly be in attendance.
During the meeting, each company will explain the work they’ve been doing to counter “information operations,” with time allotted afterwards for a discussion about specific problems that each company is facing. The final agenda item, according to the leaked email, will be to decide if the tech giants should meet regularly to discuss their anti-meddling measures.
Around 10 of the companies expected to participate in Friday’s meeting were present at a similar powwow attended by US intelligence officials. Held at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California in May, the summit included a top official from the Department of Homeland Security, as well as a representative of the FBI’s newly formed “foreign influence” task force.
Social media companies have scrambled to reassure the US government that their platforms cannot be abused, after accusations of Russian meddling emerged in the wake of the 2016 presidential election.
As a result, tech giants have launched a crusade against so-called “Russian bots” and other undesirables detected on their platforms, in some cases deleting thousands of accounts – some of which have since been shown to be owned by legitimate users.
In recent weeks, Facebook, Google and Twitter have cracked down on “hate speech” and “fake news,” which in Facebook’s case is determined in partnership with the NATO-funded Atlantic Council. The bans and suspensions that have followed have been slammed by critics as thinly veiled censorship, with tech giants seemingly using the Russian meddling hysteria to target undesirable political speech.

Hidden internal directive on Syria that got no UNSC approval DOES exist – Russian Foreign Ministry
The UN has devised internal guidelines for limiting cooperation with Syria until a "political transition" takes place there, and it was drafted without any consent from the Security Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.
The document in question is entitled 'Parameters and Principles of UN Assistance in Syria,' the ministry wrote in a statement to RT. It was issued by the UN Secretariat in October 2017 and provides guidelines for the UN agencies and programs in their work with the war-torn country.
The Secretariat issued the paper without requesting consent or even consulting the UN Security Council or the UN member states, at least on an official level, the ministry noted, adding that the "guidelines" document still "penetrates deeply" into the political situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, thus "going beyond the issue of simple coordination between the UN structures."

Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists use civilians as human shields as they hide in a refugee camp in Syrian territory controlled by the US – and the Americans are well aware of it, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.
Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and the Al-Qaeda proxy group Jabhat al-Nusra found quiet shelter in one of the biggest camps, Rukban, near the Syria-Jordan border, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters at her weekly news conference on Thursday. Neither Syrian authorities nor the UN have access to the site.
“ISIS militants, hundreds of them, and also al-Nusra militants in possession of heavy arms are hiding among the civilians, who are in fact being held hostage and used as human shields,” Zakharova said.

The same refugee camp was listed in a recent UN Security Council’s Sanctions Monitoring Team report as one of the sources of IS reemergence. The same document reported that ISIS had been defeated in most of the Syrian Arab Republic during 2017, but “rallied in early 2018” due to “loss of momentum” by forces fighting in the east of Syria, where the US base is located.
Moscow and Damascus have repeatedly urged the US to cooperate over the Rukban camp, with Russia offering to help with safe transportation of the refugees back to their homes. Earlier in August, Colonel General Sergey Rudskoy, the head of operations of the Russian General Staff, described Rukban as a place where “people are living in harsh conditions and where terrorists find shelter.”

Report: Jeff Sessions, Trump Working Together Amicably Despite Public Feud
Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday issued a forcefully worded response to President Donald Trump’s claim that Sessions “never took control” of the Justice Department (DOJ); then, hours later, the two reportedly worked together without incident.
“I put in an attorney general that never took control of the Justice Department, Jeff Sessions,” the president said in an interview with Fox & Friends Sunday morning. The remarks came as Trump discussed his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, having reached a deal with DOJ prosecutors Tuesday in which he claims he committed campaign finance violations at then-candidate Trump’s behest.
The president also put the blame for his one-time campaign manager Paul Manafort’s conviction the same day by special counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecutors. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in May 2017 after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. The decision was Rosenstein’s to make because, as a participant in the 2016 Trump campaign, Sessions had recused himself of investigations into “Russian collusion.”
“Jeff Sessions recused himself, which he shouldn’t have done or he should have told me,” Trump told Fox & Friends.
“I always put ‘Justice’ in quotes,” Trump added about the DOJ under Sessions, whom he claims to have appointed because he “felt loyalty” after the Sessions endorsement — the first from a sitting U.S. senator.

The government will continue handing hundreds of millions of dollars to a company that executes over 300 thousand human children every year. As the Republicans are in charge of the government, and have taken active measures to prevent the severing of the abortion industry's tax payer pipeline, it must be said that the Republican Party is funding Planned Parenthood. The Republican Party is taking money out of our pockets and giving it to the blood-soaked hands of baby killers. This is no longer just a Democrat initiative.
The Republicans are idiots as well as cowards, so they are also funding the Democrat Party while they fund abortions. Planned Parenthood, despite being a publicly subsidized organization, is somehow allowed to funnel millions back into the coffers of Democrat campaigns. This alone is enough reason to defund them. Though the millions of dead babies should be an even more pressing concern.
It's true that Trump partially defunded the organization a few months ago. By changing certain Health and Human Services rules, Planned Parenthood will be deprived of 50 million tax dollars every year. That's fine, but it's not even a drop in the bucket. It still leaves about half a billion dollars on the table. Trump did about as much as he could on his own. Congress needs to act on the rest, and it has not. We gave Republicans total control of the government and they have not even managed to stop the insanely unethical practice of funding abortion conglomerates.
Defunding Planned Parenthood should have been square one. A truly "pro-life" party would have gotten that done within the first week that it had the power to do so. But the Republican Party is not pro-life. Neither is it pro-small government or pro-financial responsibility. It would only need to fall into one of those categories to defund Planned Parenthood. It claims to fall into all three, despite rarely providing evidence on any count.
The Republican Party's subsidizing of the abortion industry is the greatest act of political cowardice and betrayal I have seen in my lifetime. What makes it worse is that I am not at all surprised. I expect nothing less from such a collection of empty suits, liars, and pushovers.

Fences Go Up In L.A. To Keep Out Homeless
"They put the whole sidewalk inside the fence"
The homeless problem in Los Angeles has reached such horrendous levels that business owners have erected fences on the sidewalk to clear the way.
The Guardian reports that neighborhoods in both Skid Row and South Central have seen fully-erected chain-link fences pushing out from the place of business to the edge of the sidewalk. One homeless man named Gabe described it like a prison.
"They put the whole sidewalk inside the fence,” said Gabe. "I felt like we were in prison on the sidewalk. It felt like we were in prison and could get out, but still in prison, you know what I mean?"
"They push people to the back streets where there’s no lights," he continued. "Where it’s not safe."
Community organizers and homeless advocates have said the fences violate public space.
"Business owners] don’t own the sidewalk,” said General Dogon, a longtime community organizer at the Skid Row-based Los Angeles Community Action Network. "The sidewalk is designed as a public space. It’s for everyone."
Other parts of the city have employed other measures to keep the homeless away from businesses, such as sprinklers, spikes on the ground, and benches with arms to prevent public sleeping. A homeless man named José Luis said that planters in South Central have replaced the "home" he built for himself outside a building. Many of the homeless have left the area and now camp further out onto the sidewalk, thus blocking pedestrians.
Aside from fences, Los Angeles has battled its crippling homeless problem in other ways; one involves guest houses in people's backyards. According to Los Angeles Times, the county Board of Supervisors approved back in August a "$550,000 pilot program to build a handful of small backyard houses, or upgrade illegally converted garages, for homeowners who agree to host a homeless person or family."
In Orange County, proposals have been made to create homeless encampments in empty lots.

Hillary Campaign Laundered $84 Million
This article and this officially filed complaint allege that Hillary Clinton’s campaign committee illegally laundered $84 million, thereby massively breaking the federal election laws. The case is before the U.S. DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
Here’s an example of how money was washed to conceal its illegal course. The Hillary Victory Fund receives $1 million from contributors, which it may not legally transfer to the Democratic National Committee without violating limits. It transfers the million dollars to 19 state committees. That same day or the next day, these state committees transfer the funds to the Democratic National Committee or have it done for them without their knowledge and without their appropriate filings. This is not a legally-allowable loophole. The Supreme Court ruled it out specifically in a 2014 decision (McCutcheon v. FEC).
Trump’s erstwhile lawyer, Michael Cohen, says he paid several women $280,000 in 2016 to keep quiet about their relationships with Trump. Why is the Mueller operation not investigating the Hillary money-laundering operation that allegedly involves 300 times as much money?
A federal prosecutor is quoted as saying about the Cohen plea: “Campaign finance violations are very hard to prove, and require a lot of mental evidence, or evidence of intent — not just that you know you are doing something wrong, but that you know you are doing something illegal. So to get a plea to that charge is a huge win for the government, and for the whole series of investigations.”
If so, why not prosecute Hillary? The money shuffling, in on day 1 and back out on day 1 or 2, clearly shows a coordinated operation that had the intent of flouting the election laws.
Was it a big win for Mueller? Not at all. He got a plea deal out of Cohen, but on the campaign aspect, Cohen did nothing illegal. A plea deal is not a trial and not evidence of a Trump campaign finance violation. I find Mark Levin’s analysis compelling, from which he concludes “Donald Trump is in the clear” and “There was no violation of the federal campaign finance laws”.

Mandela's Grandson Slams Trump's Tweet: S Africa 'Won't Be Dictated to'
Earlier the South African government stated that Trump's tweet was based on false information and sought to divide the country, but expressed hope that it would not affect the bilateral relations between two countries.
Nelson Mandela's grandson, Nkozi Mandela, has slammed a tweet by US President Donald Trump, in which the latter wrote that the US State Department would be looking into white farmers' land expropriation in South Africa, as "arrogant" and called Trump "ignorant of reality," the Times reported.
"President Donald Trump's unfortunate tweet shows disrespect for South Africa's sovereignty and our commitment to justice and redress," he said.
Mandela also added that South Africa wouldn't be "dictated to, threatened or pressured" in order to abandon the land reform that will end "the injustices of the past." He noted that Trump should instead deal with his own domestic issues, namely the ones that the Black Lives Matter movement champions.
Trump tweeted on August 23 that US State Secretary Mike Pompeo was tasked with looking into land reform legislation currently discussed in South Africa and the murder of white farmers there. The reform suggests that white farmers who own more than 12,000 hectares of land should be stripped of it without compensation in favor of the government that will redistribute it to its black population.
The South African government slammed Trump's tweet, saying it's based on "false information," "narrow perception" and seeks to divide the nation. South Africa's communications minister also added that the tweet would not affect relations between the two countries.
Currently the white minority of the country, which constitutes 9 percent of the population, owns some 72 percent of the arable land. Each year many of them are attacked or even brutally killed by the local black population.

Israel Revokes Citizenship of ISIS Members, Ignores Its History of Assisting ISIS
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL — On Wednesday, Israel’s Interior Ministry announced that it would revoke the citizenship of 19 Israelis who are alleged to have fought on behalf of Daesh (ISIS). The move comes after a new law went into effect, giving Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri the ability to strip Israelis deemed to be members of foreign terrorist organizations of their citizenship.
The alleged Daesh members were identified by Shin Bet, Israel’s security agency, which provided the Interior Ministry with the names of 20 Israeli nationals who had joined Daesh. However, for reasons that are still unclear, one of the individuals on that list, who was left unnamed, did not have his or her citizenship revoked. Reports in Israeli media have claimed that the majority of individuals on the list were Israeli Arabs, though some were identified as Jewish Israelis.
Overall, Shin Bet estimated that 60 Israeli citizens have left the country since the conflict in Syria began in 2011 in order to fight on behalf of armed opposition groups, including Daesh and the Al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front. Fewer than 10 are believed to have returned to Israel since fighting in Syria began. The Jerusalem Post further notes that “dozens” of Arab Israeli citizens have been arrested by Israeli authorities in recent years for allegedly seeking to join terror groups like Daesh.
With Syria lost, Daesh outlives its usefulness to Israel
While the recent decision to revoke the citizenship of alleged Daesh members has largely been framed as the Israeli government cracking down on terrorism, such narratives ignore Israel’s own past support for the terror group over the course of the Syrian conflict.
Indeed, from early on in the conflict, Israel made it clear that it “preferred” Daesh’s presence in Syria to the presence of Syria’s legitimate government, a preference soon followed by a report published by an Israeli government-funded think tank that called Daesh a “useful tool” against Israel’s regional rivals — Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah.
Since then, considerable evidence, including a 2014 United Nations report, has shown that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have long been in regular contact with Daesh, even bringing wounded Daesh members into Israel for treatment. Particularly jarring was the 2016 statement made by Israel’s military intelligence chief, Major General Herzi Halevy, that Israel does not want to see Daesh in Syria defeated.
Even the very Israeli who declared ISIS an illegal terror organization, former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, later went on to candidly admit last year that Israel maintains open communications with a Daesh cell active in the Golan Heights, even though communicating with any group deemed terrorist by the state is, without exception, illegal under Israeli law. Not only that, but Ya’alon also went on to describe a specific incident in which Daesh apologized to the IDF after opening fire on an IDF position, suggesting that the Israel-Daesh relationship is deeper than “open communications.”
Given Israel’s proven collaboration with Daesh over the course of the Syrian conflict in order to aid its own regional ambitions, the recent decision to revoke the citizenship of 19 Israeli Daesh members is hardly the straightforward counter-terrorism measure it is being made out to be.
Instead, it is likely an indicator of the quickly approaching end of the Syrian conflict, which has seen the Syrian government largely reconsolidate its territory despite the efforts of largely foreign-funded opposition groups. Indeed, though Daesh was once a “useful tool” to the Israeli government, it’s failure to dislodge the Syrian government means that the group has outlived its usefulness — as have the handful of Israelis who joined the group over the course of the conflict.

White House Praises Foreign Investment Risk Legislation That Protects US Technology
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump spoke optimistically at a White House roundtable on Aug. 23 devoted to the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA)—legislation passed early this month to protect critical U.S. companies, high technology, and sensitive real estate from coming under foreign control.
Trump described the meeting, attended by members of Congress who were instrumental in passing the act, and Cabinet members, as being partly “productive discussion” and partly “a little bit of a celebration meeting.”
The discussion of FIRRMA at the White House was to a great degree about responding to the Chinese regime’s predations.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said: “Mr. President, as you know, we often talk about this, and I’m constantly thanking you for finally standing up to China after far too long of not doing it, as an American government. … Because they seek to replace us in the world—not to be equal to us, to overtake us. And it’s almost too late. But finally, someone is standing up to them.”
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Fla.) pointed out that China doesn’t need as much as before to steal American technology, as it could now obtain technology by buying small, innovative American companies.
FIRRMA will “allow us to recognize those threats for what they are, and to stop China from buying our most critical technology,” Cotton said.
Trump noted how the United States is “rising very rapidly” and is a “hot country.” With FIRRMA, U.S. companies and companies moving to the United States “will be protected.”

Turkish-backed NFL Puts Forces On High Alert And Calls For All-Out Mobilization In Northern Syria
On August 24, the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL) announced in an official statement that it has placed its forces in the northern Syrian governorate of Idlib on high alert to repel any possible attack of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.
Furthermore, the NFL called on the remaining armed groups to follow its steps as well as called for an all-out mobilization in northern Syria. The Turkish-backed group went further revealing that it had prepared several defensive and offensive planes.
“We take the criminal regime’s threats and hints of a near battle in Idlib seriously … We call on all factions and formations in the region to do likewise,” the NFL statement reads.
The NFL was formed on August 1, when several Turkish-backed groups in Idlib and western Aleppo, including the Syrian Liberation Front (SLF), merged their forces. Back then, Syrian opposition activists reported that Turkey had played a key role in the creation of the new force.
The NFL’s statement indicates that the long-awaited military operation in northern Syria is imminent. However, Syrian pro-government activists don’t believe that the SAA will target the areas controlled by the NFL in western Aleppo or Idlib.
