The Brazilian town of Pacaraima became the epicenter of the South American migrant crisis last week as the Amazon border city couldn’t cope anymore with the daily influx of migrants from Venezuela.
In recent months, it became the entry point for thousands of Venezuelans fleeing their country which is riddled with hunger, violence, and hyperinflation.

Although most Venezuelans continue the 135 miles to Boa Vista (the capital of the Brazilian state of Roraima), some 2,000 of the poorest have stayed in Pacaraima, pitching tents in the streets. This strains the town’s resources and the tolerance of its 12,000 inhabitants, leading to clashes between Brazilian locals and Venezuelan refugees.
