President and First Lady Bill and Hillary Clinton enjoyed a friendly relationship in office with the chairman of a mosque that counted 9/11 hijackers as worshippers and invited controversial Muslim Brotherhood-linked television preacher Yusuf al-Qaradawi in for a meeting.

The Daily Caller recently reported that Bill Clinton sent a handwritten note on official stationery in March 2000 to Bassam Erstwani, the chairman of the board of the Dar Al-Hijrah Mosque in Falls Church, Virginia

Leaked photographs published by the terrorism watchdog website Shoebat.com reveal that Estwani met with Yusuf al-Qaradawi — who was banned from entering the United States in 1999 for supporting terrorism — inside the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque.

On the topic of suicide bombings, al-Qaradawi said in April 2001, “They are not suicide operations…These are heroic martyrdom operations.” Al-Qaradawi’s television program on the al-Jazeera network has made him one of the most iconic and controversial Muslim scholars in the post-9/11 world.

Meanwhile, Bassam Erstwani made multiple White House visits during the Clinton presidency and was photographed both shaking hands with President Clinton in the Oval Office and also smiling next to Hillary Clinton at a White House event.

How Anwar Awlaki Got Away

Nov. 30, 2009

A felony arrest warrant for radical Islamic cleric Anwar al Awlaki was rescinded in 2002 a day before he was intercepted as a terror suspect at New York's JFK airport, forcing authorities to release him, according to sources familiar with the case. The warrant was cancelled by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Denver, even though Awlaki was on a terror watch list, and even though the office's supervising prosecutor for terror cases – who has now been appointed by the Obama administration as the U.S. Attorney in Denver – had been fully briefed on Awlaki's alleged terror ties, according to investigators.

When Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik massacred 14 people in San Bernardino, California, last December, newly retired Department of Homeland Security agent Philip Haney discovered that a case he developed might have prevented the attack if it had not been shut down by his agency and Hillary Clinton’s State Department.

Patrick Poole, a terrorism analyst and national security reporter who has covered the mosque, told the Washington Free Beacon that Dar al-Hijrah has been a "premier" spot for "terrorist recruitment" and questioned why Democrats would choose this as a site to promote tolerance.

"That Democrats in the name of tolerance and diversity are mainstreaming extremists like this is inherently damaging to the Muslim community," Poole said. "These same folks just yesterday wanted to take away the Second Amendment rights of those on the terror watch list, and now they want to embrace a mosque that we know from FOIAs was on the terror watch list. Unbelievable."

HILLARY FIRE THE IMAM

To Hon. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State:

As you know, the State Department continues to employ Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf as a roving goodwill ambassador to the Muslim world. In this capacity he is charged with articulating American values to often skeptical audiences and with defending our principles globally.

Recent investigations have uncovered evidence of deep radicalism on Imam Rauf's part, and have raised justifiable questions regarding his suitability as an American spokesperson. For their part Imam Rauf and his defenders have smeared concerned citizens as bigots, such that he can no longer credibly defend America as the land of tolerance that you and I know it to be.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is of course the man who seeks to plant a Muslim victory monument at Ground Zero as a venture in interfaith understanding, or something. Unbelievably, the State Department has found Rauf an appropriate spokesman for the United States in the Middle East.

But Imam Feisal evidently moves in circles in which inquiries about whom he’s meeting overseas, what he’s telling them, or where he plans to get $100 million for his mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero are seen by both Rauf and his hosts as an extraordinary intrusion on his public outreach and bridge-building endeavors.

In 1989, Union City’s Community Development Agency awarded Rauf $384,000 in grants to help him renovate three of those properties. But in March 1992, Rauf – citing “heavy and unforeseen additional carrying costs” estimated at $87,000 – asked then-Union City mayor BOB MENEDEZ for $80,000 in city funds to help him cover his expenses temporarily; it is not known whether Rauf ever received that money. Two weeks after contacting Menendez, however, Rauf got approval on nearly $1.3 million in construction loans from the affordable-housing trust fund of Hudson County, New Jersey – and subsequently another $630,900 from the state – on condition that he agree to rent the units at “affordable” rates through 2017.

Together with such luminaries as former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Ziad Asali, Ingrid Mattson, Dalia Mogahed, and diplomat Dennis Ross, Rauf was a leading voice in the Leadership Group on U.S.-Muslim Engagement, adopted by President Barack Obama's administration.

Rauf had previously said that he would seek funds from overseas to finance the $100 million mosque project but offered no specifics. A spokesman for the project refused to say whether Rauf would accept money from Iran.
