NASA: Space Force needed to protect energy grid from 'existential threat'

President Trump’s “Space Force” proposal would help prevent the U.S. energy grid from going dark in an emergency or an attack, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner.

Bridenstine argued that a disruption of America’s satellite assets would pose an “existential threat” to the grid, meaning that a Space Force is needed more than ever.

He compared the threat to those facing the banking system today. Both Wall Street and the electricity sector are dependent on the same Global Positioning System, or GPS, signals from space to operate, he explained.

“Every banking transaction requires a timing signal from GPS,” he says. “In other words, if there is no GPS, there is no banking in the United States. Everything shuts down.”

“It becomes an existential threat,” Bridenstine added.

Likewise, the situation would be similar for the electric grid, if a foreign adversary targeted U.S. assets in space, he said.

Flake: McCain taught me the value of standing alone to do what is right

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who died Saturday, taught him “the value of standing alone to do what is right.”

Flake, who served for more than a decade in the House as a representative from Arizona beginning in 2001, wrote in The Washington Post that he “was feeling pretty low” early in his House career, when he said he sparked criticism from local officials and newspaper writers after challenging different funding projects.

Flake said he was on a flight from Washington to Arizona when McCain approached him.

“He stuck his finger in my chest and demanded: ‘Don’t. Back. Down! You’re in the right, they’ll come around,’” Flake wrote.

“It was all that I needed,” Flake added.

Fox News host criticizes Trump over condolences tweet that avoided praising McCain

Fox News analyst Brit Hume took a swipe at President Trump over his tweet offering condolences to the family of GOP Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), who died Saturday at the age of 81.

Hume pointed out that Trump’s tweet avoided praising McCain himself, setting it vastly apart from the dozens of tributes to the late senator posted by lawmakers from both parties.

“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain,” Trump tweeted Saturday after the announcement of McCain’s death. “Our hearts and prayers are with you!”

“Still not a kind word about McCain himself,” Hume replied.

Germany praises McCain as advocate of a strong transatlantic partnership

Germany's foreign minister praised Sen. John McCain hours after the Arizona Republican’s death, calling him a “convinced advocate of a strong and reliable transatlantic partnership.”

“[McCain] was a convinced advocate of a strong and reliable transatlantic partnership, especially in difficult times,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a tweet.

“He believed in our shared values and principles,” he added.

“We will always remember his voice.”

In June, McCain slammed Trump’s trade policies, telling allies after the G7 summit that “Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn’t.”

Kennesaw State Cuts 4 of 5 Cheerleaders Who Took a Knee During Anthem Last Year

The school newspaper, the Sentinel, noted that four of the five kneelers did not make the cut for the 2018 football season. KSU’s athletic department reported that 91 women tried out for the 52 spots on the various cheer squads, up from 61 applicants last year. The department also noted that three other members of last year’s teams also did not make the cut for this year.

“Similar to all KSU sports teams, multi-year spots on rosters are not guaranteed, and all student-athletes must earn their position on a team,” a letter from the KSU athletic department stated according to the school’s paper.

The five cheerleaders made national news last year when they joined in with the NFL’s protests against the country during the playing of the national anthem. Their protests earned them the nickname “The Kennesaw Five.”

The cheerleaders, all African American students, immediately sparked outrage in the Kennesaw community.

Swalwell: We don't have enough evidence to impeach Trump

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) said Sunday there is not enough evidence yet to bring impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

On ABC’s "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," Swalwell said Trump is not above the law, but Democrats don’t have enough evidence yet to say that he has committed a high crime and misdemeanor.

“We don’t want to be as reckless with the facts as he is,” he said. “I think having thorough investigations, putting forth an impenetrable case, doing it in a bipartisan way is the proper way to do this, but we’re not there yet.”
