Arizona governor faces task of making appointment to Sen. McCain’s seat until 2020 special election
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey faces the task of appointing a successor for Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday. McCain, remembered by many as a ‘maverick’ Republican, held his seat in the U.S. Senate for nearly 32 years.
What are the options?
Under Arizona law, Ducey, a Republican, can appoint someone fill the Senate vacancy for the next two years, until a special election in 2020 to decide the right to complete the final years of McCain’s term. In 2022, the seat will be up again for a full six-year term.
According to state law, the appointee must be from McCain’s party.
In recent months, the governor has declined to say – citing respect for McCain and his family – which Republican he might appoint to McCain’s seat.
In a statement published Sunday by the Arizona Republic, Ducey’s senior adviser Daniel Ruiz II indicated that the governor will not make any announcements about an appointment until after McCain’s burial.
On Saturday, Ducey released a lengthy statement honoring McCain as an “American hero” and “icon.”
“Here at home, we were most proud to call him a fellow Arizonan,” Ducey stated. “Like so many of us, he was not born here, but his spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous.”
What are the possibilities?
Cindy McCain, the senator’s wife, is viewed as a likely appointee, Politico reported. In May, Ducey and his wife spent time with the McCains and that led to speculation about her possible appointment.
Other potential appointees are Kirk Adams, the governor’s chief of staff; former state lawmaker Barbara Barrett, a businesswoman and former gubernatorial candidate; and former Sen. Jon Kyl, who retired from the Senate in 2013, the Arizona Republic reported. Added to that list are former Reps. Matt Salmon and John Shadegg; Karrin Taylor Robson, a state board of regents member; and Eileen Klein, the state treasurer.
Ducey is seeking re-election this fall and has ruled out appointing himself to McCain’s seat.
Speculation about a potential replacements have been met with criticism from Ducey and his office multiple times this year. Ducey has also made it clear that people who are actively campaigning for the appointment will not be considered.
“To the politicians out there that have been openly lobbying for this position, they’ve basically disqualified themselves by showing their true character,” Ducey said in December. His statement to a local radio station came after Rep. Paul Gosar’s chief of staff sent a text to a Ducey member to indicate interest in a potential appointment, according to published reports.
During McCain’s battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer, the topic of his possible replacement was generally considered taboo in both Arizona and Washington.
Former Arizona secretary of state Ken Bennett, who is challenging Ducey in next week’s gubernatorial primary, pledged on social media earlier this year that he would not appoint McCain’s wife to the seat. Ducey at the time called Bennett’s comments “indecent” and “embarrassing,” according to reports.
Still, Bennett has repeatedly raised the topic. On Saturday morning, prior to the announcement of McCain’s death, Bennett tweeted that Ducey had still not ruled out Cindy McCain for the appointment. Bennett called that a “lack of leadership.”

WATCH US Pastor Call Faithful to Protect Trump From Witchcraft
The pastor, who has also predicted an upcoming battle between the US president and the "deep state”, insisted that his message wasn't political.
During a service at the Church of His Presence in Daphne, Alabama, Pastor John A. Kilpatrick called upon the congregation to pray for US President Donald Trump in order to protect the latter from witchcraft.
As can be seen in the video posted on the Pray Alabama Facebook page, Kilpatrick warned those in attendance “witchcraft is trying to take America back over” and urged them to help him pray for Trump.
"God, make him bold! Make him strong! Keep him, Lord, with your keeping power! Preserve him, Holy Spirit!" the preacher intoned. "Don’t let him lose his voice! Make him stronger than ever, Holy Spirit! Make him more resolute than he’s ever been!"
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Kilpatrick was inspired by Trump frequently describing the ongoing investigation into alleged Russian collusion as a "witch hunt", though the pastor insisted that he’s "not being political."

US, Mexico May Announce Nafta Deal As Soon As Monday
As discussed yesterday, a key outstanding question over the future of global trade may be about to get an answer: after five weeks of negotiations on trade issues between the administrations of Trump and Enrique Pena Nieto, the U.S. and Mexico are close to resolving bilateral differences on Nafta and may wrap up as soon as Monday, "clearing the way for Canada to possibly return to talks to update the three-nation trade pact."
As Bloomberg reports, "the nations achieved significant breakthroughs in the past several days on the critical issues of automobiles and energy, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing private talks. Talks are expected to continue Sunday."
In recent weeks, the U.S. and Mexico had been focused on the thorny issue of car manufacturing amid a push by the Trump administration for a deal that would boost factory jobs in America. Specifically, the U.S. has proposed tightening regional content requirements for car production and having a certain percentage of a car manufactured by higher-paid workers.
And while a U.S. proposal to increase tariffs on cars imported from Mexico that don’t meet stricter new content rules was a sticking point as recently as last week, that issue appeared to be resolved by Thursday according to Bloomberg sources.
The U.S. agreed to keep the 2.5 percent tariff currently applied under World Trade Organization rules if the cars are made at factories that already exist, according to two people familiar with the plans, who asked not to be named discussing private negotiations.
That would leave open the possibility that cars that don’t meet the rules and are built at new plants could face tariffs of 20 percent to 25 percent, pending the results of a Section 232 national security investigation that Trump ordered in May, the people said.

Israeli Soldiers' Sensitive Data Hacked and Leaked to Third Parties – Report
Personal information of hundreds of thousands recruits and their relatives has been stolen from the servers of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), according to a report by the authorities. The suspects are said to have fished out sensitive data and sold it over the course of several years.
An investigation by the Israel Securities Authority (ISA) has revealed that between 2011 and 2014 staffers from the so-called recruitment unit, accessed the files of thousands of Israeli soldiers-to-be.
According to the Israeli broadcaster Hadashot news, the four suspected perpetrators used a specially developed program to fish out personal data from these files, including the recruits' and their relatives' contacts. The perpetrators, undetected for years, allegedly sold this information to marketing companies and other third parties.
Following the investigation, the ISA passed the information on the scam to the cyber unit of the State Attorney’s office. According to media reports, the police are currently questioning the four suspects and their homes have been searched for evidence.
The investigation was prompted by complaints from soldiers, indicating that they were targeted by specific marketing calls, offering various products and services. According to the soldiers, those who contacted them, knew sensitive information about the potential clients, such as that some of them held foreign passports.

Thousands of Militants Preparing Attack on Syria Hama, Aleppo – Russian Military
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Several thousand militants armed with heavy weaponry and armored vehicles are preparing for an offensive on the Syrian provinces of Hama and Aleppo, the Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday.
The ministry said that the leader of the Tahrir al-Sham group (affiliated with the Jabhat Nusra terror organization) called on all militants in the Syrian northwestern province of Idlib to prepare for an offensive against the Syrian government forces.
“Several thousand militants with heavy weaponry and armored vehicles have been gathered for an offensive on Hama and Aleppo,” the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation’s spokesman said.
The so-called drills, led by the White Helmets group, on actions “in case of chemical contamination,” are currently being held in the town of Jisr al-Shughur in Idlib, the spokesman noted.
Earlier in the day, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that the Tahrir al-Sham militants are preparing a provocation in Idlib to accuse the Syrian government forces of using chemical weapons against civilians. The militants had brought eight canisters with chlorine to stage the chemical attack in Jisr al-Shughur in Idlib. These containers were subsequently handed over to the militants of al-Hizb al-Turkistani al-Islami group and transported to the Haluz village near Jisr al-Shughur, Konashenkov added.
The chemical weapons provocation, currently being prepared by terrorists in Syria, is aimed at allowing France, the United Kingdom and the United States to carry out a strike on Syrian government’s targets, according to the Russian military.
