At this point, two arms reached out to grab him, not letting go even as he lost his balance and was pushed onto the child.

Aides and security men stopped the Pope from falling to the ground, and he appeared angry, raising his voice and telling the unseen person, twice in Spanish, โ€œDonโ€™t be selfish!โ€

He called it a "mafia" club that bore the name of St. Gallen. The group wanted a drastic reform of the Church, to make it "much more modern", and for Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to head it. The group, which also comprised Cardinal Walter Kasper and the late Jesuit Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, has been documented in Austen Ivereigh's biography of Pope Francis, The Great Reformer.

At 8:23 pm (20:23) local time, the Italian Conference of Bishops released a statement congratulating Cardinal Angelo Scola of Milan on his election as pope. A corrected statement was released at 9:09 pm (21:09).[109] As cardinals described the voting process, carefully suppressing details so as not to violate their oath of secrecy, one offered this assessment, that "Scola might have won" and "is obviously qualified to be pope", but there was "a very strong bias against the Italians." He added: "There was a sense that the Italians aren't up to the job anymore [sic]. They used to be so good, but lately they seem to have lost control of things."[18]

But there is one encounter the pope has steadfastly avoided since his election in 2013. Angelo Scola of Milan, the powerful and conservative Italian cardinal many thought would be pope before the surprise choice of the Argentinian Jesuit known as Father Bergoglio, received word of the latest apparent snub last week.

Todayโ€™s challenges in the world of migrants and refugees will soon be discussed more extensively by Ms. Gabriella Rodriguez, UN Rapporteur for the Human Rights of Migrants, and by Prof. Stefano Zamagni, President of the International Catholic Migration Commission.

In this context, the Holy Mother Church cannot remain indifferent. She wants to share the joys and the grief of all migrants and refugees, there where they are, and be with them in their search for a better and safer life, worthy of being children of God. Thus, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Member of our Pontifical Council, will present to us the pastoral challenges involved in such a complex situation.
